“#NBC’s Andrea Mitchell unleashes Twitter<\/a> tempest over Shakespeare quote fail<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\u200bNBC News<\/a>\u2019 Andrea Mitchell flubbed an attempt to fact\u200b-\u200bcheck GOP Sen. Ted Cruz\u2019s reference to a quote by Shakespeare\u200b, inviting some \u201cdouble, double toil and trouble.\u201d\u200b<\/p>\n

Cruz (R-Texas) was discussing the second Senate impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump on Fox News<\/a> Wednesday when he \u200binvoked\u00a0a line from Shakespeare.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s reminiscent of Shakespeare [in] that it is full of sound and fury, and yet signifying nothing,\u201d\u200b he said, \u200breciting\u00a0\u200ba soliloquy \u200bfrom \u201cMacbeth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u200bBut Mitchell app<\/a>arently thought the quote came from author William Faulkner of Mississippi instead of the Bard of Avon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c@SenTedCruz says #ImpeachmentTrial is like Shakespeare full of sound and fury signifying nothing. No, that\u2019s Faulkner,\u201d she tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Faulkner used part of the quote for the title of his 1929 novel, \u201cThe Sound and the Fury.\u201d<\/p>\n

The full quote from \u201cMacbeth\u201d reads, \u200b\u201d\u200bIt is a tale, told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.\u200b\u201d\u200b\u200b<\/p>\n

Annie Gowan of the Washington Post tweeted<\/a>: \u201cOh dear Andrea, this is a Scottish tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mitchell apologized<\/a> later for the literary blunder.<\/p>\n

\u201cI clearly studied too much American literature and not enough Macbeth. My apologies to Sen. Cruz,\u201d she posted.<\/p>\n

Cruz needled Mitchell<\/a> on her knowledge of Shakespeare\u2019s plays, referring to a line in \u201cHamlet\u201d to make his point.<\/p>\n

\u201cMethinks she doth protest too much. One would think NBC would know the Bard. Andrea, take a look at Macbeth act 5, scene 5: \u2018[Life] struts & frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more. It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound & fury, Signifying nothing.\u2019 Methinks she doth protest too much,\u201d Cruz said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
