Look, not all remakes are bad \u2013 some can even be quite good! But I can unequivocally say that there is absolutely\u00a0no reason whatsoever<\/em> for a\u00a0Face\/Off<\/em><\/strong> remake. And yet\u2026we\u2019re getting one anyway! And it will be directed by Adam Wingard<\/strong>, the filmmaker behind\u00a0You\u2019re Next<\/em>,\u00a0The Guest<\/em>, and the upcoming\u00a0Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em>. And hey, I like Adam Wingard! I like a lot of his films! But\u2026no. This is not a good idea.<\/p>\n

Released in 1997, John Woo\u2019s\u00a0Face\/Off<\/em> is an action masterpiece. It\u2019s bombastic, and silly, and wildly entertaining. It has an entire action sequence scored to \u201cOver the Rainbow.\u201d It has Nicolas Cage<\/strong> and John Travolta<\/strong> pretending to be each other. It has a boat chase. It has a big shootout in a church full of doves. It has pretty much everything you could want in a movie about archenemies who swap faces. And there is absolutely nothing to be gained by remaking the movie. And yet, here we are! With a\u00a0Face\/Off<\/em> remake in the works. Deadline reports that Adam Wingard is set to direct the remake, and he\u2019ll also write the script<\/a> with writing partner\u00a0Simon Barrett<\/strong>.
\nIn case you\u2019ve somehow never seen the original (and if you haven\u2019t, fix that immedia<\/a>tely), here\u2019s a synopsis:<\/p>\n

Obsessed with bringing terrorist Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage) to justice, FBI agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) tracks down Troy, who has boarded a plane in Los Angeles. After the plane crashes and Troy is severely injured, possibly dead, Archer undergoes surgery to remove his face and replace it with\u00a0Troy\u2019s. As Archer tries to use his disguise to elicit information about a bomb from Troy\u2019s brother, Troy awakes from a coma and forces the doctor who performed the surgery to give him Archer\u2019s face.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Again: I am not averse to remakes in general<\/a>. And I like a lot of Wingard\u2019s films!\u00a0The Guest<\/em> is a fantastic action-horror film.\u00a0You\u2019re Next<\/em> is a lot of fun.\u00a0A Horrible Way to Die<\/em> is a bleak, expertly crafted little horror-drama. But this seems like a monumentally bad idea. It\u2019s not that the premise of\u00a0Face\/Off<\/em> is untouchable \u2013 you can, in theory, do a lot with the idea of two enemies switching places. But Wingard feels like the wrong person for the material. I\u2019d much rather he and Barrett create their own gonzo action masterpiece rather than hammer out some needless remake of a John Woo movie.<\/p>\n

The only way this works, in my opinion, is if they bring Travolta and Cage back, but reverse things \u2013 so Travolta starts off as the terrorist, and Cage is the FBI agent, and then they switch places. Otherwise \u2013 thanks, but no thanks.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time we\u2019ve heard of this potential remake. Back in 2019, it was reported that one was in the works with\u00a0Oren Uziel<\/strong>, writer of\u00a022 Jump Street<\/em>,\u00a0The Cloverfield Paradox<\/em>, and\u00a0Sonic the Hedgehog<\/em>\u00a0tackling the script. And I guess Wingard and Barrett seem like better choices in retrospect. But still\u2026this entire idea rubs me the wrong way.
