Due to open in early April, when shipments of vaccine are expected to increase dramatically, the plan is that the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">city-operated sites will administer at least 120,000 doses a week, as part of a web of vaccination options that include doctor\u2019s offices, pharmacies and mobile clinics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While plans like those in Toronto are being rushed to completion across the country, the im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te focus is the painfully slow number of vaccine doses that are currently arriving in Canada. Shipments that were expected to arrive have either been reduced or cancelled, creating a growing hole in first-quarter plans to vaccinate the highest-risk populations as quickly as possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0What is Canada doing to hold the COVID variants at bay?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maclean\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has calculated that the vaccine deficit<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is more than 940,000 doses, or 27.5 per cent of the 3.4 million doses <\/span>that had been<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expected to arrive by the end of February.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none;\" title=\"The vaccine gap\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/_\/ZVEUoKmlfCVIgCoJ6ipo?src=embed\" width=\"1000\" height=\"640\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original schedule had Pfizer doses arriving weekly and Moderna doses coming every three weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting early in 2021, PHAC\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection\/prevention-risks\/covid-19-vaccine-treatment\/vaccine-rollout.html#a4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccine rollout webpage outlined the arrival schedule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the end of February, along with planned allotments to the provinces and territories. The <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210114090619\/https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection\/prevention-risks\/covid-19-vaccine-treatment\/vaccine-rollout.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data from Jan. 7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was soon replaced with new, lower numbers, as first Pfizer and then Moderna announced problems: Pfizer needed to take its Belgian production facility offline so it could expand it while Moderna was struggling with supply issues. Such problems were always expected as the pharmaceutical industry geared up to produce massive quantities of vaccine, but at a time when every dose is precious, those shortfalls were painfully felt in cancelled <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointments and closed vaccination clinics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problems started with the shipments of the week of Jan. 18, as did a growing gap of what was expected to arrive and what was actually shipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Prizer\"><\/span>Prizer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Jan. 18:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Shipment <\/span><strong>reduced by<\/strong> <strong>18,525<\/strong> <strong>doses<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (208,650 expected; 190,125 arrived)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jan. 25:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> No shipment, so <\/span><strong>reduced by<\/strong> <strong>208,650<\/strong> doses<\/p>\n<p>Feb. 2:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Shipment <\/span><strong>reduced by<\/strong> <strong>288,600 doses<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (367,575 expected; 78,975 arrived)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Feb. 8:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Shipment <\/span><b>reduced <\/b><strong>by 297,395 doses<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (367,575 expected; 70,200 arrived)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Feb. 15:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Shipment <\/span><b>reduced <\/b><strong>by 36,270 doses<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (439,920 <\/span>expected, as per change to <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using six doses\/vial);\u00a0 403,650 should arrive)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Feb. 22:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Shipment <\/span><b>increased <\/b><strong>by 35,080<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> doses<\/strong> (439,920 expected; 475,020 should arrive)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Overall_Pfizer_deficit_814320_doses\"><\/span>Overall Pfizer deficit: 814,320 doses<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Moderna\"><\/span>Moderna<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Feb. 2: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shipment <strong>reduced<\/strong> <strong>by 50,400 doses<\/strong> (230,400 expected; 180,000 arrived)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Feb. 22:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Shipment <strong>reduced<\/strong> <strong>by 81,600 doses<\/strong> (249,600 expected, 168,000 should arrive)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Overall_Moderna_deficit_132000_doses\"><\/span>Overall Moderna deficit: 132,000 doses<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If all expected doses in the remainder of February arrive as planned, <\/span>the overall COVID-19 vaccine hole will be 946,320 doses of both Moderna and Pfizer vaccine.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none;\" title=\"COVID_Vaccine_distribution_TABLE\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/_\/YOkx7UjXcoPe2c2LPDWO?src=embed\" width=\"845\" height=\"461\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of Feb. 10, some 1.15 million doses have been administered, according to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/art-bd.shinyapps.io\/covid19canada\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data collected by the COVID-19 Canada Open Data Working Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span>Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin, who is in charge of vaccine logistics and operations, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have stated repeatedly: Pfizer has promised to ship four million doses and Moderna has promised another two million by the end of the first quarter of 2021, meaning a combined total of six million doses by March 31.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the planned deliveries to the end of February, Pfizer will need to ship another 2.19 million doses by March 31, while Moderna will need to ship another 1.31 million doses.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0Can two people who\u2019ve been vaccinated hug each other?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, in total, <\/span>another 3.5 million doses of Moderna and Pfizer vaccine<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0should arrive in the month of March alone.\u00a0(On Feb. 11, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/pfizer-doses-trudeau-target-1.5910524\">Fortin announced that Pfizer<\/a> would ship 440,000 doses the week of March 1 and another 440,000 doses the week of March 8.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As provinces and health units hold back some vials for second doses\u2014as of Feb. 10, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/covid19tracker.ca\/vaccinationtracker.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90 per cent of doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> given to the provinces have been administered\u2014<\/span>even an assumption that Canada uses 90 per cent of those shipments promised in March would mean distributing more than 3.1 million<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doses during that month<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and getting them in people\u2019s arms. That would mean at least<\/span> 100,000 vaccinations a day<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, seven days a week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0COVID-19 in Canada: How our battle against the second wave is going<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 30,000 vaccines were distributed on Feb. 10, according to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/art-bd.shinyapps.io\/covid19canada\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data collected by the COVID-19 Canada Open Data Working Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cities and provinces may have to push forward their mass immunization plans to meet that end of March goal, but it is doable, especially as the need is so great.
