The New Zealand of the 1860s comes to life \u2014 along with a\u00a0 dash of murder \u2014 in new series<\/a> \u201cThe Luminaries.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new series, based on the 2013 Man Booker Prize-winning novel<\/a>, premieres Feb. 14 on Starz (9:30 p.m.) and is both a period drama and a mystery.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI had never heard of the book,\u201d said the show\u2019s star Eve Hewson (\u201cThe Knick\u201d).\u00a0\u201cBut when I was auditioning, I was telling friends what I was going in for and a lot of them had read it and loved it. So then when I got the job, I started reading it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The plot follows Anna Wetherell (Hewson), a young adventurer from the UK who\u2019s travel<\/a>ing to find a new life in New Zealand.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After befriending fellow traveler Emery Staines (Himesh Patel \u201cAvenue 5\u201d) on the boat over from Britain, and American fortune teller Lydia Wells (Eve Green, \u201cPenny Dreadful\u201d) once she arrives, Anna soon finds herself implicated in a murder.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe character [of Anna] was so fleshed out, it was one of those dream acting jobs, [where] there was so much range and\u00a0 a lot of challenges. You can\u2019t ask for anything better, really,\u201d said Hewson, 29. \u201cI like her resilience \u2013when it looks like she\u2019s not going to fight back, she does.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series departs from the doorstopper-of-a-book in putting Anna at the forefront of the action. Hewson, who\u2019s Irish but is based in Brooklyn, says that was part of the show\u2019s app<\/a>eal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI liked the idea of putting a female character at the center of the story \u2014 because in the book, Anna really comes in three-quarters of the way through, and it\u2019s really about the men trying to navigate the story,\u201d she said. \u201cSo I thought that was interesting. [The role] was physically demanding\u2026 being thrown around and drowned and on the back of horses and sleeping in bushes and being chained to the jail cell in the middle of the summer in New Zealand in a black dress.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the plot progresses, Anna must figure out her muddled-memory of the night that the murder happened, while a love story develops between Anna and Emery. Meanwhile, Lydia Wells becomes increasingly manipulative.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c[Eve Green] is a legend,\u201d says Hewson. \u201cShe\u2019s such a fantastic committed actor but also a really lovely woman. She\u2019s thoughtful and looked out for me. Just really gentle and kind. I adore her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unlike many shows that use a convenient location such as Vancouver for a catch-all setting, \u201cThe Luminaries\u201d production really did travel to New Zealand.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was beautiful,\u201d says Hewson. \u201cWhen we went out onto the beach or flew down to the south island, that was magical. It was very peaceful \u2014 being able to go be so far away from the rest of the world and concentrate on this one story and character. I really cherish that time in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hewson is pulling double-duty on two shows at once \u2014 she\u2019s also starring in Netflix show \u201cBehind Her Eyes,\u201d premiering Feb 17. She plays the mysterious Adele, who falls into an unlikely friendship with Louise (Simona Brown), a woman who\u2019s having an affair with Adele\u2019s husband (Tom Bateman).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a genre that I\u2019d never done before \u2014 a psychological thriller. And I\u2019d always wanted to do that,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a role that I don\u2019t think people would have expected me to play, so that was exciting to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve done a lot of historical stuff and it\u2019s been good because you learn so much, but I would like to do different things. Maybe it would be fun to do something in the future just to switch it up, because I\u2019ve done so much in the past. Maybe a movie on Mars.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
