The\u00a0Chinese\u00a0government is banning BBC News<\/a> from landing in its country after the British outlet published an explosive story on alleged torture and rape occurring in\u00a0Uighur<\/a>\u00a0concentration camps.<\/p>\n

The decision comes one week after Ofcom, the media<\/a> regulator of the United Kingdom had nixed a license\u00a0for the state run China Global Television Network (CGTN) to air in the UK.<\/p>\n

A Thursday statement from China\u2019s National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) accused the BBC of not meeting the government\u2019s standards for reporting \u2014 including that it allegedly undermined China\u2019s national unity.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter investigation, the relevant content of BBC World News\u2019s China-related reports seriously violated the relevant provisions of the \u2018Regulations on the Administration of Radio and Television\u2019\u00a0and the \u2018Administrative Measures for the Landing of Overseas Satellite TV Channels,\u2019 violated the requirements that news should be truthful and fair, harmed China\u2019s national interests and undermined China\u2019s national unity,\u201d the NRTA said in the statement.<\/p>\n

The authority went on to state that the BBC does not meet its standards of \u201cforeign channels in China, the State Administration of Radio and Television does not allow BBC World News to continue to land in China and will not accept its app<\/a>lication for landing in the new year.\u201d<\/p>\n

The BBC\u00a0said it was \u201cdisappointed\u201d in the move while British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab blasted the decision as \u201can unacceptable curtailing of media freedom,\u201d according to\u00a0Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, the BBC\u00a0has never been allowed to broadcast in mainland China or directly into most Chinese homes. It is mostly\u00a0available via satellite in international hotels and the homes of some foreigners and upper echelon citizens.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0BBC\u2019s\u00a0report on the Uighurs included alleged former detainees\u00a0who claimed horrific abuses like raping women with electrocuting instruments, as well as forcing others to watch a woman being raped.<\/p>\n

The US State Department responded by saying it was \u201cdeeply disturbed\u00a0by reports, including firsthand testimony, of systematic rape and sexual abuse against women in internment camps for ethnic Uighurs and other Muslims in Xinjiang.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nature of China\u2019s repressive security apparatus makes it difficult to report on the workings of the mass detention camps in Xinjiang.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Reported former detainees have come forward describing, among other things, forced sterilization and abortions on Uyghur women.<\/p>\n

At the end of former President Trump\u2019s administration, the State Department formally accused China of genocide.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
