Stuart Martin is the titular Duke in the crime drama \u201cMiss Scarlet and the Duke.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series<\/a> is set in 1882 Victorian London and follows Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips, \u201cPeaky Blinders\u201d), a trailblazing woman running her father\u2019s detective agency after his death. She frequently works with her father\u2019s old friend, Scotland Yard Detective Inspector (DI) William Wellington (Martin) \u2014 aka \u201cThe Duke.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Scottish-born Martin, 35, who\u2019s also known for \u201cGame<\/a> of Thrones,\u201d \u201cMedici: Masters of Florence\u201d and \u201cJamestown,\u201d answered some questions for The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What attracted you to this show?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I just loved the script<\/a>s. At first you think you know what it is \u2014 it\u2019s a Victorian cop drama \u2014 but very quickly it\u2019s like, \u201cOK this is different.\u201d It\u2019s light and it\u2019s witty. I think very often pieces [covering] that time can get very dark and sort of gruesome. It\u2019s just such a fun show, and Rachael [New], our amazing creator, has this brilliant way of writing dialogue and characters. Each scene has a bit of a spark.<\/p>\n

Did you do any research to prepare for the role?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

I grew a beard. No, I did lots [of research], actually. I love doing period stuff because you know nothing about that time other than what you learned 15 years ago in school, even though you never really listened to any of it. So it\u2019s great to go back and try to find out what was going on culturally and politically and find out where your character is in that world. I really loved finding out about London at the time and the whole 1800s leading up to where we are [in the show]. Me and Kate [Phillips] both read this brilliant book called \u201cHow to Be a Victorian\u201d<\/a> which is actually a lot of fun and it\u2019s got the whole history of that time and how people were. I found it very useful, I loved it. And I read \u201cSherlock Holmes,\u201d because that\u2019s the same period.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Did you learn anything that surprised you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You know Tower Bridge in London \u2014 that famous old bridge? I discovered that the London Underground was actually built before that, which sort of fascinated me. I was like, \u201cWait a minute, surely the London Underground [was built in] like the 1920s or something.\u201d But it\u2019s been going since the 1800s. So this was all in our show\u2019s time. It was a really innovative period.<\/p>\n

What was the most challenging part of the role?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The cop chat. If you had a case and you have to go say, \u201cWe found the body and it had a gunshot here\u2026\u201d When you learned these great scenes in the mortuary, it would fly off \u2014 but the actual learning of [the dialogue] and making sure that it was all specific to the case [was challenging]. And also the names. Because every week you have new character names to remember. But everything else was a total dream. It was a lovely job.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the status of a second season?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019ll have to wait and see. There\u2019s big hope for it and lots going on in the background to get that to happen. It\u2019s been such a weird time, but we shall watch this space and hopefully soon [there will be news<\/a>].\u00a0<\/p>\n

Do you have any other projects you\u2019re also working on?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Zack Snyder is doing [a prequel<\/a> to his upcoming] \u201cArmy of the Dead,\u201d<\/a> for Netflix, so I filmed that in Prague. It was a very different experience, because we were basically locked in our hotel for two-and-a half months. Normally on jobs you fly back every weekend and see the family, but it was total lockdown. I\u2019m excited about the film \u2014 it\u2019s really cool and it looks great.\n <\/div>\n
