\n Well they weren\u2019t drilling for a pandemic, that\u2019s for sure.<\/p>\n

Scores of cops descended on Randall\u2019s Island Monday for a disaster-prep drill \u2014 with barely any in the tightly packed crowd wearing face masks, photos show.<\/p>\n

Only three out of the more than 100 in a sea of blue can be seen properly donning the protective gear, despite being huddled closely together during the drill, photos from the scene show.<\/p>\n

Hours later, photos emerged of the latest NYPD academy class \u2014 depicting an overwhelming number officers wearing no or improper face coverings.<\/p>\n

In one of the shots, nearly 70 of the rookies aren\u2019t wearing any face coverings as they sit side-by-side listening to Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch, who is also maskless.<\/p>\n

City Council members have repeatedly harped on the NYPD for ignoring mask directives \u2014 something brass brushed off at a hearing earlier this month.<\/p>\n

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, meanwhile, called on municipalities to get their cops to enforce mask orders during a radio app<\/a>earance Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have to enforce the compliance and their police department has to do it,\u201d Cuomo said told WAMC with Alan Chartock.<\/p>\n

The masks prevent wearers from transmitting coronavirus to others, and the NYPD\u2019s official directive is for officers to wear some sort of face-covering to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n

That sparked a heated exchange between Chief of Department Terence Monahan and city\u2019s health commissioner in March.<\/p>\n

Monahan \u2014 the highest-ranking uniformed cop \u2014 has been previously caught with his mask down multiple times, shaking hands and kneeling with protesters, despite the directive.<\/p>\n

A spokeswoman for the department conceded that the officers should have been wearing masks \u201cbut the objective of this drill was emergency response and that is what we sought to measure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe focus was to get our officers to the location and set up as quickly as possible,\u201d the spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n

The officers were practicing a level 4 mobilization \u2014 the city\u2019s highest level of disaster response \u2014 which has not been used outside of training since the 9\/11 terror attacks.<\/p>\n

The PD did not immedia<\/a>tely address, though, the lack of face coverings at the academy.<\/p>\n

Nearly 6,000 officers have contracted the virus and it has claimed the lives of 46 uniformed and civilian members.<\/p>\n
