\n The St. Louis couple that brandished firearms at a group of protesters outside their home violated basic gun-safety rules \u2014 and narrowly avoided a \u201cvery disastrous result,\u201d experts told The Post on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt seemed app<\/a>arent they have a very limited knowledge of firearms safety and firearms handling,\u201d said Charles Stephenson, a former FBI Agent and firearms instructor.<\/p>\n

Stephenson said that although husband Mark McCloskey wisely kept his finger off the trigger of his AR-15-style rifle, wife Patricia McCloskey took no such precaution as she wielded a silver-colored handgun.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe female had it kind of limp-wristed and it seemed she was actually pointing it at the individuals in the street,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo actually point the barrel of a weapon at somebody with your finger on the trigger\u2026could have had a very disastrous result.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephenson, who runs the Orion Group private investigations agency in Overland Park, Kansas, also noted that Mark McCloskey\u2019s rifle was presumably loaded with high-powered ammunition that can \u201ctravel<\/a> a mile away\u201d and penetrate buildings.<\/p>\n

Instead of holding the weapon level, as Mark McCloskey did, \u201cI would have it pointed to the ground or up in the air with my hand on the pistol grip,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

David Lombardo, president of SAFER USA, a firearms training school in Chicago, said that \u201cI can see the desire for a middle-aged couple to be armed\u201d but noted that \u201cnobody actually approached them\u201d during the Sunday night standoff.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe part that I would be concerned about is pointing a gun at somebody,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t shoot somebody over a property crime. If you don\u2019t feel your life is in danger, you really shouldn\u2019t be pointing a gun at someone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lombardo \u2014 who also works as a firearms consultant and expert witness \u2014 further questioned the wisdom of the confrontation, saying, \u201cThat\u2019s a pretty scary situation and people don\u2019t always think as they should.\u201d<\/p>\n

The incident unfolded as protesters passed by the McCloskeys\u2019 \u201cMidwestern palazzo\u201d mansion in a gated community on their way to the home of Mayor Lyda Krewson to demand her resignation for releasing the names and addresses of residents who favor de-funding the St. Louis Police Department.<\/p>\n

Mark McCloskey, a lawyer, defended his actions Monday during an interview with a local TV station, saying \u201cWe were threatened with our lives, threatened with a house being burned down, my office building being burned down, even our dog\u2019s life being threatened.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was, it was about as bad as it can get,\u201d he told NBC affiliate KDSK.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, those you know, I really thought it was storming the Bastille, that we would be dead and the house would be burned and there was nothing we could do about it.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
