\n Brandon Hendricks was \u201cthe kid you want your daughter to marry,\u201d his uncle told The Post. But now he\u2019s dead at 17, cut down Sunday night in yet another of the city\u2019s soaring number of shootings.<\/p>\n

The loss of the Bronx hoops star with a bright future is breaking hearts across the city \u2014 but not slowing the #DefundtheNYPD train one bit.<\/p>\n

Hendricks, eyeing top college teams after he graduated from James Monroe HS a week ago, went to a friend\u2019s birthday barbecue \u2014 and hours later wound up pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital. His coach called him \u201ca remarkable basketball player\u201d and a \u201ccharismatic, humble young man.\u201d<\/p>\n

But guns are going off all over the city these days. Last week saw 85 victims hit in 63 shootings, more than twice the 26 gunshots fired in the same time last year.<\/p>\n

One law-enforcement source blames the teen\u2019s death on the NYPD\u2019s decision \u2014 under pressure from anti-police protesters \u2014 to scrap its anti-crime units, which focused on getting guns off the streets.<\/p>\n

To appease critics further, Mayor Bill de Blasio and the City Council are also moving to slash $1 billion from the department\u2019s $6 billion budget.<\/p>\n

Yet the activists won\u2019t be satisfied: The plan uses \u201cfunny math and budget tricks\u201d to \u201cmislead New Yorkers,\u201d gripes a Communities United for Police Reform flack.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s true the planned haircut won\u2019t likely devastate the force: It reportedly includes taking school-safety and homeless-outreach work away from the department, which isn\u2019t a real cut.<\/p>\n

As for canceling a class of 1,100 recruits: That\u2019s the kind of hard decision you expect when the city has lost billions in revenue thanks to the pandemic; all agencies, the NYPD included, must make do with less.<\/p>\n

Yet if these trims mean fewer cops \u2014 as de Blasio admits is possible \u2014 they\u2019ll need even more tools to help curb the surging violence. Those anti-crime units, for example, may be more necessary than ever. So, too, will fixes to Albany\u2019s still-botched 2019 bail reform, which lets criminals roam free before trial without posting bail.<\/p>\n

At a minimum, the city\u2019s leaders need to explain how they\u2019re going to boost<\/em> law enforcement \u2014 not just rush to appease the cop-bashers.\n <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
