“#Calls for more cops on NYC subway grow after A train carnage<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n

The outcry for more cops on city subways reached a fever pitch Saturday in the wake of a killer\u2019s rampage on the A line. And the NYPD app<\/a>eared to be listening, announcing at least 500 more officers would be on patrol underground by Monday. <\/p>\n

Shell-shocked riders and angry officials pulled no punches in demanding safer subways, as a massive manhunt got underway for a lone madman believed to be responsible for\u00a0fatally stabbing\u00a0two homeless people and slashing two others in a 14-hour span Friday and Saturday. <\/p>\n

Shaken straphangers at the A train\u2019s Far Rockaway Mott Avenue station called for stepped-up security, including increased patrols and even metal detectors.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s scary. It\u2019s really scary. I\u2019ve never felt safe on the subway, but I\u2019ve always known I\u2019ve had to take them,\u201d said Marissa Augustus, 17. \u201cI\u2019m scared for my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maurice Moore, 33, said the subways are simply not safe at night anymore.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I go home late, there\u2019s no cops here,\u201d he said. \u201cBetween the hours of 8 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon you see them, but you don\u2019t see them after that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe recent horrifying attacks in the subway system are outrageous and unacceptable,\u201d NYC Transit interim President Sarah Feinberg urged\u00a0in a joint statement with TWU Local 100 President Tony Utano. \u201cEvery customer, and each of our brave, heroic transit workers, deserve a safe and secure transit system.<\/p>\n

Transit officials agreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been calling on the city to add more police to the system, and to do more to assist those who desperately need mental health assistance. The time for action is now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea announced a \u201csurge\u201d of 500 more officers for the NYPD\u2019s Transit Bureau to be deployed across the city immedia<\/a>tely.<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil this individual is apprehended the A line is probably going to be the safest line in the city,\u201d said NYPD Transit Chief Kathleen O\u2019Reilly, who added 75 undercover cops, and 40 yanked from desk duty, would join the effort.<\/p>\n

Shea said, \u201cBuilding on what has already been done in terms of man and women power in our transit system of late, we will immediately\u00a0commence a surge of officers to patrol both above and below ground, to ensure that everyone that rides our transit system on a daily basis not only is safe, but just as importantly, feels safe.\u201d<\/p>\n
