However, you may not want your Google Home or Nest to be listening all the time. That\u2019s where the mute switch comes in.<\/p>\n<p>Before we get started, it\u2019s important to understand what it means when we talk about devices like the Google Nest Mini and Nest Hub \u201clistening.\u201d These devices are technically \u201clistening\u201d all the time, but they aren\u2019t <em>recording<\/em> you all the time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How (and Why) to Opt-In to Google Recording Storage<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A smart speaker or display is like a dog. It may hear you whenever you talk, but it only recognizes certain commands. Google Assistant doesn\u2019t truly start \u201clistening\u201d (recording) until it hears \u201cOK Google\u201d or \u201cHey Google.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That being said, it is possible to completely stop the device from hearing you at all. Google has included physical mute switches on all Google Assistant-enabled devices. When you slide this switch, the microphones are turned off, and the device won\u2019t listen or respond.<\/p>\n<p>These mute switches can be found on the back or bottom of the devices.
