\n

New York State\u2019s coronavirus vaccine sign-up website struggled with long wait times and tech troubles Sunday, as slots opened up to people with certain underlying conditions.<\/p>\n

Many users reported the issues on social media<\/a> Sunday morning as a mass of people flooded the State Department of Health\u2019s \u201cAm I Eligible Tool<\/a>.\u201d The issues app<\/a>eared to ease as the day progressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe good news<\/a>: NY State website is updated w\/ underlying conditions option for vaccine eligibility, and new appointments have been added,\u201d tweeted<\/a> Councilman Mark Levine, who chairs the council\u2019s health committee.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bad news: site is extremely glitchy and is crashing due to volume,\u201d Levine wrote. <\/p>\n

\u201cNot a good start to this critical new phase.\u201d<\/p>\n

A state DOH spokesperson maintained that the agency\u2019s screening tool and scheduling site were \u201cfunctioning extremely well,\u201d with an average of 350 appointments booked per minute as of Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n

As of 1 p.m., more than 876,000 people had used the \u201cAm I Eligible Tool,\u201d with over 100,000\u00a0appointments booked, the agency said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs expected, the site is experiencing a\u00a0tremendous amount of volume after appointments were opened to\u00a0New Yorkers\u00a0with\u00a0comorbidities\u00a0and underlying conditions this morning,\u201d DOH spokesperson Gary Holmes said in a statement.<\/p>\n

But the agency admitted that the number of people who can schedule appointments at one time at each site is limited to balance the load on the system caused by increased demand.<\/p>\n

Once that number is reached, users are sent to \u201conline waiting rooms\u201d that hold their place in line, before then being admitted to the scheduling system on a first-come, first-served basis.<\/p>\n

Should both the scheduling system and the waiting room be full, the DOH urged people to return later and keep trying to book a slot, as new appointments are being\u00a0rolled out throughout the day.<\/p>\n

Some users reported wait times of between 20 and 40 minutes or other glitches.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe NY state website is a disaster,\u201d one person commented on Twitter<\/a>. \u201cI made it all the way through signing up and then got bumped off after clicking confirm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another wrote<\/a>: \u201cWaited in \u2018virtual line@ for an hour, then got \u2018no appointments available.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is BULLSHIT! The State has had months to get this together. I\u2019ve been trying ALL DAY! (since before 8am),\u201d said one user<\/a>. \u201cThis is not cute & not a joke. Get it FIXED!\u201d<\/p>\n

Others urged patience and suggested using a Chrome browser, instead of Safari.<\/p>\n

\u201cI secured a vaccine for my mom who has one the underlying conditions. The site is messy, but with patience I hope people can also get their appointments!\u201d someone tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Another said<\/a>: \u201cI had to wait 25 minutes in line using my phone browser but finally got an appointment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even at the best of times, New Yorkers have long griped about the state and city\u2019s byzantine network of sign-up pages to get the shot. <\/p>\n

Gov. Andrew Cuomo previously announced that New Yorkers with certain underlying conditions would be eligible for the vaccine starting Feb. 15.<\/p>\n

The state\u2019s screening tool and scheduling site launched a day early to allow people to start looking for and booking their appointments.<\/p>\n

New appointments will be released on a rolling basis over the coming weeks, the state said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Starting next week, local health departments will begin receiving vaccine allocations meant for people with comorbidities.<\/p>\n

People must prove they are eligible using a doctor\u2019s letter, medical information evidencing comorbidity or a signed certification.<\/p>\n
