Perez Hilton feels guilty for skewering Spears in the past. <\/p>\n

The notorious gossip columnist has expressed regret over his brutal past treatment of Britney Spears following the release of the \u201cFraming Britney Spears\u201d documentary chronicling the pop star\u2019s portrayal in the media. Social media<\/a> was incensed after the series<\/a> showed Hilton\u2019s actions while the \u201cBaby One More Time\u201d singer was at her lowest point. <\/p>\n

\u201cI regret a lot or most of what I said about Britney,\u201d the media personality, 42, told \u201cGood Morning Britain\u201d Monday<\/a>. \u201cThankfully, hopefully, many of us get older and wiser.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Twitterati had recently eviscerated Hilton for his scathing coverage at the height of his gossip blog popularity, which included calling Spears an \u201cunfit mother\u201d after the umbrella incident with paparazzi in 2007. He had also infamously featured T-shirts sporting the message, \u201cWhy couldn\u2019t it be Britney?\u201d on his site when actor\u00a0Heath Ledger died in 2008.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerez Hilton commenting on the Britney situation is wholly inapp<\/a>ropriate when he was the frothing cheerleader in chief,\u201d tweeted one critic. <\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cOnce we free Britney, we must imprison Perez Hilton,\u201d another wrote<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Some accused Hilton of only apologizing after his dirty laundry resurfaced. \u201c@GMB<\/a> it\u2019s no good everyone apologizing to @britneyspears<\/a> now that this documentary has come out,\u201d they wrote. \u201cThis is the problem! I just feel so sorry she\u2019s had to deal with so much hate. @PerezHilton<\/a> was one of the worst!\u201d<\/p>\n

Later on in the interview, Hilton defended veteran journalist Diane Sawyer<\/a> over a resurfaced 2003 interview in which she grilled Spears over her breakup with then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake. <\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone who was talked about in this documentary briefly, Diane Sawyer \u2014 a respected journalist, a good woman \u2014 but many people are painting her out to be a villain,\u201d said Hilton, whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr.<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cI think a lot of fans and folks just want to blame this person and that person, but it\u2019s not as simple as that. There are real, mental health issues at play with Britney Spears.\u201d<\/p>\n

The columnist added that the criticism was hypocritical given the less-than-compassionate reaction to rapper and former presidential candidate Kanye West\u2019s recent mental breakdowns. <\/p>\n

Hilton joins a long list of celebrities<\/a> apologizing to the \u201cPrincess Of Pop\u201d for past transgressions amid the #FreeBritney movement on social media. <\/p>\n

In the most highly publicized mea culpa, Justin Timberlake<\/a> said he was sorry for his \u201cignorance\u201d surrounding the media treatment of Spears following his breakup with the \u201cToxic\u201d singer in 2002. <\/p>\n

Timberlake\u2019s \u201cCry Me A River\u201d video pushed a narrative that Spears, 39, cheated on him and broke his heart.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
