It comes with two cameras, computers, and navigation sensors.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also equipped with solar cells to recharge its batteries, much of the energy being used for staying warm on cold Martian nights, where temperatures fall to minus 130 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 90 degrees Celsius).<\/p>\n<p>The helicopter is hitching a ride on the belly of the Perseverance rover, which will drop it to the ground once it has landed then drive away.<\/p>\n<p><b>90 second flights<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Up to five flights of gradual difficulty are planned, over a window of one month, within the first few months of the mission. <\/p>\n<p>Ingenuity will fly at altitudes of 10-15 feet (3-5 meters) and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> as far as 160 feet (50 meters) from its starting area and back.<\/p>\n<p>Each flight will last up to a minute and half\u2014compared to the 12 seconds the Wright brothers achieved with the first powered, controlled flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in 1903.<\/p>\n<p>Like the Perseverance rover, Ingenuity is too far away from Earth to be operated using a joystick, and is therefore designed to fly autonomously. <\/p>\n<p>Its onboard computers will work with its sensors and cameras to keep it on a path programmed by its engineers.<\/p>\n<p>But the outcome of these flights will be learned only after they took place. <\/p>\n<p><b>What&#8217;s the goal?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>NASA describes Ingenuity&#8217;s mission as a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> demonstration&#8221;: a project that seeks to test a new capability together with the astrobiology mission of Perseverance.<\/p>\n<p>If it&#8217;s successful, however, it &#8220;basically opens up a whole new dimension of exploring Mars,&#8221; said Bob Balaram, Ingenuity&#8217;s chief engineer.<\/p>\n<p>Future models could offer better vantage points not seen by current orbiters or by slow-moving rovers on the ground, allowing the helicopters to scope out terrain for land-based robots or humans.<\/p>\n<p>They could even help carry light payloads from one site to another\u2014such as the rock and soil samples Perseverance will be collecting in the next phase of the Mars 2020 mission.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<div class=\"article-main__explore my-4 d-print-none\">\n<p>                                            Six things to know about NASA&#8217;s Ingenuity Mars helicopter\n                                        <\/p><\/div>\n<hr class=\"mb-4\"\/>\n<p class=\"article-main__note mt-4\">\n                                                \u00a9 2021 AFP<\/p>\n<p>                                        <!-- print only --><\/p>\n<div class=\"d-none d-print-block\">\n<p>                                                 <strong>Citation<\/strong>:<br \/>\n                                                 NASA wants to fly a helicopter on Mars for the first time (2021, February 16)<br \/>\n                                                 retrieved 16 February 2021<br \/>\n                                                 from https:\/\/phys.org\/<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>\/2021-02-nasa-helicopter-mars.html<\/p>\n<p>                                            This document is subject to copyright.
