This put the market share of these 84 exchanges at roughly 74% with more than $1 trillion in assets.<\/p>\n<p>However, CryptoCompare said this percentage likely rose to 85% for January. Given that the total market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies is $1.47 trillion at the time of publication, the market share of these exchanges may now be more than $1.2 trillion.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2021-02\/b92adb21-6413-4c1d-85ca-2d4e090de479.png\"><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Source: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cryptocompare.com\/media\/37746111Coinbasecryptocompare_exchange_benchmark_2021_02.pdf\">CryptoCompare<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The report attributed the increase in market share to retail and professional crypto traders turning to exchanges with seemingly lower risk as the price of Bitcoin (BTC)\u00a0surged past $20,000 in late December\u00a0and $30,000 in January.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, one of the more significant reasons for the increased market share may be CryptoCompare rating 16 more exchanges as \u201ctop tier\u201d than in October \u2014 a designation meant to measure an exchange&#8217;s level of risk rather than their superiority. The firm noted that many exchanges are now complying with \u201ctoughened\u201d KYC and AML requirements. Many are also providing increased transparency, and improving their overall operational status.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to CryptoCompare\u2019s results, the firm said that 44% of the 160 exchanges analyzed offered the ability to \u201cquery full historical trade data via a public API endpoint,\u201d compared to 37% in July. In addition, the percentage of exchanges rated as having \u201cpoor or inadequate\u201d KYC systems according to CipherTrace had fallen from 44% in July to 33% in January.<\/p>\n<p>The report specifically mentions Coinbase, Gemini, Bitstamp, Kraken, itBit and Luno as the &#8220;lowest risk exchanges.
