\n John Wayne\u2019s son has lashed out at calls to dump his dad\u2019s name from a California airport, insisting his dad \u201cwas not a racist\u201d \u2014 and would even have \u201cpulled those officers off of George Floyd\u201d were he alive.<\/p>\n

Ethan Wayne told Fox News<\/a> Monday that it would be an \u201cinjustice\u201d to rename John Wayne Airport in Orange County because of a 1971 interview in which his father said he supported white supremacy and dismissed the pain of slavery.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me make one thing clear \u2014 John Wayne was not a racist,\u201d the actor\u2019s 58-year-old son told Fox News.<\/p>\n

Ethan acknowledged the \u201cpain and anger\u201d caused by the bigoted words in his dad\u2019s 1971 Playboy article, but said it was an \u201cinjustice to judge him based on a single interview\u201d where his \u201cfeelings were wrongly conveyed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe truth is \u2026 he did not support \u2018white supremacy\u2019 in any way and believed that responsible people should gain power without the use of violence,\u201d Ethan told Fox.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe called out bigotry when he saw it. He hired and worked with people of all races, creeds, and sexual orientations.<\/p>\n

\u201cJohn Wayne stood for the very best for all of us \u2014 a society that doesn\u2019t discriminate against anyone seeking the American dream.\u201d<\/p>\n

In fact, his dad \u2014 who was 72 when he died from cancer in 1979 \u2014 \u201cwould be in the forefront demanding fairness and justice for all people\u201d if he were alive today, his son insisted to the network.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe would have pulled those officers off of George Floyd, because that was the right thing to do. He would stand for everyone\u2019s right to protest and work toward change,\u201d he told Fox.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe current focus on social<\/a> justice is absolutely valid and necessary. But attempts by some to use it for political advantage distracts from real opportunities for reform,\u201d insisted Ethan, the president of John Wayne Enterprises.<\/p>\n

In his damning Playboy interview, Wayne had said, \u201cI believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t feel guilty about the fact that five or 10 generations ago these people were slaves,\u201d he also insisted.<\/p>\n

As a part of the trend to remove memories of America\u2019s racist past, leaders of Orange County\u2019s Democratic Party used the almost-50 years old interview to campaign to dump his name from the area\u2019s airport.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn international airport that serves millions of people each year should not be named for someone who, in real life, opposed our nation\u2019s values of opportunity and justice for all,\u201d Ada Brice\u00f1o, chair of the Democratic Party of Orange County, said in a statement. \u201cNow is the time for change.\u201d<\/p>\n

The airport was renamed in his honor in 1979 \u2014 the year he died \u2014 and a statue of Wayne was also erected on site in 1982.<\/p>\n
