\n \u201cDilbert\u201d creator Scott Adams is under fire for claiming that his show was canceled because of his race.<\/p>\n

The cartoon, which ran on UPN from 1999 to 2000, was based on a comic strip<\/a> by the same name and featured a pessimistic office worker as the title character.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI lost my TV show for being white when UPN decided it would focus on an African-American audience,\u201d Adams wrote on Twitter<\/a>. \u201cThat was the third job I lost for being white. The other two in corporate America. (They told me directly.)\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s not the only TV figure injecting race into the social-media conversation.<\/p>\n

This weekend, a 2017 tweet from the Hollywood Reporter widely recirculated about Lena Dunham selling her hit show \u201cGirls\u201d to HBO at age 23 with a page-and-a-half pitch \u201cwithout a character nor a plot.\u201d Many in the entertainment industry, particularly people of color, used this tweet to show how Dunham benefitted from privilege that they didn\u2019t have to succeed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a masters degree in film and teach film at a top tier university, an over twenty five year professional career and I walk into pitches with a fully realized bible pilot and seven season arc, and often times told it\u2019s not enough. But Lena Dunham, cool,\u201d wrote actor Ahmed Best, who is black.<\/p>\n

Adams directly replied to Best\u2019s tweet with his claims about UPN.<\/p>\n

Twitter users were quick to call Adams out for his claims. \u201cIt\u2019s illegal to fire someone for their race, even if they\u2019re white. So. No one believes that multiple jobs told you that you didn\u2019t get the job because you were white,\u201d wrote Nikole Hannah-Jones, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist behind the New York Times\u2019 1619 Project about slavery.<\/p>\n

Adams doubled down on his claims. \u201cI wasn\u2019t fired. I was told I couldn\u2019t be promoted because of my color and gender, so I left, of course,\u201d he posted. \u201cI invite anyone who had the same experience in corporate America to say so in the comments. Red Pill coming. Open wide,\u201d he said in a reference to the Matrix.<\/p>\n

Twitter user @letsgoayo responded, \u201cHere\u2019s the thing, Scott: we don\u2019t believe you. Here\u2019s another thing, Scott: black people read the news<\/a>paper. Black people liked Dilbert. Black people didn\u2019t try to take anything from you, we had always been among your audience. Until you became openly racist.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the Wrap, UPN stopped airing shows in 2006.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter UPN ended, black TV shows largely disapp<\/a>eared for at least a decade. During that time, almost all networks\u2019 time slots remained filled with white shows .\u2009.\u2009. just not yours,\u201d said wrote Akilah Green, who writes for \u201cA Black Lady Sketch Show\u201d and \u201cPerfect Harmony.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others pointed out Adams\u2019 hypocrisy by quoting a segment from the \u201cDilbert\u201d Wikipedia page, which cites the creator claiming network issues led to the demise of the show, not his race.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
