Kevin James said he wasn\u2019t expecting to jump back into the sitcom waters after \u201cKevin Can Wait\u201d finished its two-season run on CBS.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was kind of done for a little bit,\u201d said James, 55. \u201cI love the format of a sitcom. I really do. It gives that \u2018classic comfort feel\u2019 to me \u2014 but I\u2019d done domestic comedy and I feel like people had seen me in the exact same thing,\u201d he said, referring to \u201cKevin Can Wait\u201d and his earlier CBS sitcom, \u201cThe King of Queens,\u201d which ran for nine seasons (1998-2007).<\/p>\n

But James was intrigued when app<\/a>roached by executive producer Todd Garner about starring in \u201cThe Crew\u201d on Netflix<\/a> \u2014 and realized that, while it\u2019s a sitcom, there\u2019s a big difference from his previous forays into the genre.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s basically a workplace comedy,\u201d he said about the new series<\/a>, set in the world of NASCAR racing. He plays Kevin Gibson, the good-natured crew chief of a struggling NASCAR racing team that\u2019s thrown into a tizzy when its owner, Bobby Spencer (Bruce McGill), retires \u2014 and brings in his Stanford-educated daughter, Catherine (Jillian Mueller), to run the operation. <\/p>\n

\u201cAt first I was reluctant because I wasn\u2019t too familiar with the [racing] world; it\u2019s an exciting world but I didn\u2019t know where the laughs would come from,\u201d James said. \u201cI didn\u2019t know what it would be. I read the first script from [series creator] Jeff Lowell and it was fantastic. It made me laugh\u2026and NASCAR was just the backdrop. They were excited about doing it with us because they\u2019d never done a sitcom before.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the pieces lined up.\u201d<\/p>\n

James is working for the first time with his co-stars on \u201cThe Crew,\u201d which, in addition to Mueller, include British actor Freddie Stroma as Jake, the team\u2019s dimwitted star driver; Gary Anthony Williams as Chuck, its sarcastic chief mechanic; Sarah Stiles as tart-tongued officer manager Beth; and Dan Ahdoot as Amir, its sad-sack chief engineer.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can have all the elements of the show come together, from script to production to NASCAR to Netflix, but if there\u2019s no [cast] chemistry it doesn\u2019t matter,\u201d James said. \u201cIt\u2019s the one thing you can\u2019t control. It\u2019s either there, or not. I gotta tell you, man, it was so there on \u2018The Crew.\u2019 Shooting that first episode I felt like we were in Season 3 already. Jillian and Sarah come from Broadway, Gary Anthony Williams comes from improv and Dan Ahdoot is a standup who\u2019s also on \u2018Cobra Kai.\u2019 We went to eclectic places and got great actors. Some of them have never done a sitcom before but they\u2019re pros \u2014 they know the timing and how to work with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Crew\u201d filmed its first seven episodes in front of a studio audience before the industrywide shutdown last March; the last three were completed, once production restarted, sans studio audience and with COVID restrictions in place.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the season we were planning to go to a lot of major [NASCAR] races and shoot live stuff with the massive crowds but that couldn\u2019t be done,\u201d James said. \u201cWe had use a green screen [to simulate that]; next season, provided we get one, we\u2019re going to go to the races live and do all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

James said that he\u2019s done with networks sitcoms, at least for now.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I am. I\u2019ll never say never \u2014 because you don\u2019t know how it will work out, but \u2026 at a network, there are so many cooks in the kitchen, from the studio to everybody\u2019s got their underling and everybody has their own ideas of what\u2019s going on and it could be their own interests, which changes the feel of the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cNetflix doesn\u2019t do that,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s one entity and they let you do your own thing. They don\u2019t interfere. It\u2019s like, \u2018Whatever you guys say.\u2019 I feel like they\u2019re really partners, and I never felt like that with a network series before.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
