\n The Detroit cops seen driving through protesters in viral video thought they were being \u201cfired upon,\u201d their police chief said as his department released dramatic dashcam footage of the chaos.<\/p>\n

Chief James Craig told a press conference that two marked squad vehicles were parked to block protesters from going down a main road when they were set upon by 25 to 30 \u201cagitators\u201d Sunday night.<\/p>\n

Several of the group \u201cexhibiting violent behavior\u201d then \u201cjumped on the hood of the car,\u201d he said, pointing to the released dashcam footage which showed some jumping on, flying off as the squad car sped away.<\/p>\n

The main vehicle being surrounded initially tried \u201cslowly moving\u201d through the angry crowd \u2014 but feared the worse when the back window was smashed out, the chief said, also releasing images of the damage.<\/p>\n

The officers were \u201cnot certain that they were not being fired upon,\u201d the chief said \u2014 pointing to the loud bangs caught by the dashcams.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was important for them to get out of there for their safety, and certainly the safety of others,\u201d he insisted. \u201cSo that\u2019s where you see in the video \u2014 that they accelerated it to get out of there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The chief also read a message from one of the protesters who claimed that the group had been \u201cplotting to provoke police.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWould you prefer the officers sat in the car, waiting for someone to break out the side windows and begin to drag the officers out and start assaulting?\u201d he asked, according to the Detroit Free Press.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s realistic. Those things happ<\/a>en,\u201d he said, saying the \u201cofficers did the right thing\u201d in following training to escape when ambushed.<\/p>\n

Several protest groups in the city were not appeased by his claims and on Monday called for the chief\u2019s resignation, the Free Press said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
