Media<\/a> critic: The Times\u2019 Dilemma<\/strong><\/p>\n

The New York Times\u2019 media critic\u00a0Ben Smith examines recent events and muses<\/a>\u00a0that the paper\u2019s \u201cunusual, perhaps unhealthy, central place in American news<\/a>, culture and politics\u201d makes it \u201can object of obsession\u201d for others, intensified by its \u201cmedia ambitions\u201d as it \u201cseeks to be the\u00a0voice\u00a0whispering in your ear in the morning\u201d and \u201cthe curriculum in your child\u2019s history class.\u201d Indeed, the controversies signal \u201cThe Times\u2019s unique position in American news may not be tenable. This intense attention, combined with a thriving digital subscript<\/a>ion business that makes the company more beholden to the views of left-leaning subscribers, may yet push it into a narrower and more left-wing political lane as a kind of American version of The Guardian \u2014 the opposite of its stated, broader strategy.\u201d It must decide: Is it \u201cthe leading newspaper for like-minded, left-leaning Americans? Or is it trying to hold what seems to be a disappearing center in a deeply divided country?\u201d<\/p>\n

Super PAC watch: The \u2018Toxic\u2019 Lincoln Project<\/strong><\/p>\n

At USA Today, Amanda Becker goes<\/a> \u201cinside the Lincoln Project\u2019s \u2018toxic\u2019 workplace,\u201d where women \u201cwere sidelined,\u201d leadership used \u201ccrude sexual and homophobic slurs\u201d and accusations a founder \u201csexually harassed young men,\u201d including underlings, \u201cwere an open secret.\u201d More than half the $90 million the Never Trump super PAC raised \u201cflowed to firms controlled by\u201d its male founders \u2014 with Steve Schmidt frequently quipping the group was his ticket to \u201cgenerational wealth\u201d \u2014 while its sole female founder was paid about $150,000 annually. Schmidt claimed he knew nothing of allegations John Weaver \u201csexually harassed more than a dozen young men\u201d until they became public in January, but many of the group\u2019s leaders were \u201ctold in conversations and in writing\u201d in June, and nearly all knew by August, when they began to craft \u201ca media plan\u201d to address them.<\/p>\n

Faith beat: Protect Your Church, Joe<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Biden made much of his Catholic faith while campaigning, and Mary Eberstadt at\u00a0Newsweek urges<\/a>\u00a0him to protect his coreligionists from his \u201cliberal and progressive allies.\u201d The left is increasingly bent on meting out \u201costracism and punishment\u201d to orthodox Catholics: Witness Twitter\u2019s suspension of Catholic World Report, Ignatius Press\u2019 online zine, on the \u201crisible\u201d ground that describing Assistant Secretary of Health-designee Rachel Levine as a \u201cbiological male\u201d was \u201chateful.\u201d A question: \u201cIf a cultural authority as established as Ignatius Press can be punished online for being Catholic, who will be spared?\u201d As \u201cthe most visible Catholic political leader in the world,\u201d Biden has \u201ca unique opportunity\u201d to prove his \u201cstated commitment to being president for all. It\u2019s the bully pulpit. Call off the woke online haters stalking your fellow Christians.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Good Words Can\u2019t Absolve Bad Deeds<\/strong><\/p>\n

As former friends and colleagues accuse \u201cBuffy the Vampire Slayer\u201d creator Joss Whedon of \u201ccheating and abuse,\u201d it\u2019s clear the self-proclaimed \u201cwoke bae\u201d embodies \u201cthe popular conception of a \u2018male feminist\u2019 as someone who self-consciously defends women in public while mistreating them in private,\u201d snarks Ben Sixsmith at Spectator USA<\/a>. \u201cHuman beings are very talented rationalizers,\u201d and some insist \u201csaying good things makes up for not doing good things,\u201d giving words \u201cthe power of absolution.\u201d But no words \u201cleave as great an impression on people as our behavior,\u201d and \u201cour ideas and our art do not affect people as powerfully as our deeds affect our friends and family members.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMuch of the Midwest and Mountain states are seeing subzero temperatures and blizzard conditions\u201d as a polar vortex sweeps through, but don\u2019t count on \u201cgreen energy to the rescue,\u201d\u00a0warns National Review\u2019s John Fund<\/a>. As Minnesota\u2019s Center for the American Experiment reports, wind turbines shut down when temperatures dip below -22\u2109 because it\u2019s too cold to run them safely. Solar panels, too, are often disabled by snow and ice and are useless at night. \u201cIf \u2014 God forbid \u2014 Joe Biden realizes his maniacal dream of zero fossil fuels, the people in North Dakota, Minnesota, Chicago and Boston will be in big trouble,\u201d fears Fund.<\/p>\n
