\u201cBridgerton\u201d could be whipping up its very own Kate Middleton vs. Meghan Markle rivalry.<\/amp-fit-text><\/p>\n

Stunning \u201cSex Education\u201d actress Simone Ashley is the new leading lady in town, the hit Netflix show has announced<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The erotically charged period soap \u2014 based on\u00a0Julia Quinn\u2019s best-selling series of novels<\/a>, created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by \u201cScandal\u201d queen Shonda Rhimes \u2014 is set in the competitive world of frilly, high-style Regency London in the 1880s.<\/p>\n

The first season of Shondaland\u2019s smash mix of \u201cGossip Girl\u201d and Jane Austen revolved around virginal social<\/a>ite Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor, 25) and her steamy love affair with the sultry spoon-licking Duke of Hastings (Reg\u00e9-Jean Page, 31).<\/p>\n

For Season 2 \u2014 based on Quinn\u2019s second entry her book series<\/a>, \u201cThe Viscount Who Loved Me\u201d<\/a> \u2014\u00a0sweet Daphne will have to share the spotlight a la Princess Kate and Duchess Meghan, as the new episodes will focus on the marital pursuits of Daphne\u2019s eldest Bridgerton bro: Anthony (Jonathan Bailey, 32).<\/p>\n

Ashley, 25, will assume the leading role of Anthony\u2019s romantic interest: <\/em>Kate Sharma, a fresh London transplant from India, who is described as an intelligent, \u201cheadstrong young woman who suffers no fools\u201d \u2014 Anthony included, according to an announcement<\/a> on Shondaland TV\u2019s Twitter. <\/p>\n

Season 2 <\/em>of <\/em>\u201cBridgerton\u201d\u00a0also will find the show\u2019s producers continuing to break casting conventions in the vein of Broadway\u2019s \u201cHamilton.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ashley\u2019s Kate \u2014 originally christened Kate Sheffield in Quinn\u2019s second novel \u2014 and her family are of Indian descent in a continuation of the reimagined, multiracial world of old-school high society created in Season 1, which included several major black characters, including the Duke (Page), Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) and Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) not featured in the original book series, Deadline first reported<\/a>. <\/p>\n

In addition to her role as Olivia Hanan in Netflix\u2019s acclaimed \u201cSex Education,\u201d Brit actress Ashley was also recently seen in the UK\u2019s ITV mystery drama \u201cThe Sister.\u201d She\u2019s reportedly one of several fresh faces cast in \u201cBridgerton,\u201d which is the most-watched series in the streaming giant\u2019s history with 82 million households tuning in during the first four weeks of Season 1.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a bunch of new characters we are going to be introducing,\u201d Van Dusen, creator and showrunner, revealed during an interview <\/a>on\u00a0\u201cToday with Hoda & Jenna\u201d\u00a0in Janurary.<\/em>\u00a0\u201cAnthony is going to have a love interest next season, and I think it\u2019s going to be as sweeping and moving and as beautiful as viewers of the first season have come to expect from the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Season 2 plot twist also was teased in the final minutes of the Season 1 finale, when Anthony declared his goal of \u201cfinding and promptly declaring my intentions to my new viscountess,\u201d after the implosion of his illicit relationship with proudly bawdy opera singer Siena (Sabrina Bartlett).<\/p>\n

However, Van Dusen stressed during the interview that he also hopes Page and Dynevor will reprise their roles. <\/p>\n

Note: Ashley\u2019s prior \u201cSex Education\u201d experience could come in handy. Season 1 of \u201cBridgerton\u201d featured nude love scenes so steamy they were infamously ripped for hardcore porn sites \u2014 much to Page and Dynevor\u2019s dismay.<\/p>\n
