“#NYC public school asks parents to ‘reflect’ on their ‘whiteness’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

A city public school principal is asking parents to \u201creflect\u201d on their \u201cwhiteness\u201d \u2014 passing out literature that extols \u201cwhite traitors\u2019\u2019 who \u201cdismantle institutions,\u201d education officials confirmed to The Post on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The \u201cwoke\u2019\u2019 offensive at the East Side Community School in Manhattan features a ranking list titled \u201cThe 8 White Identities,\u201d<\/a> which ranges from \u201cWhite Supremacist\u2019\u2019 to \u201cWhite Abolitionist.\u201d<\/p>\n

The curriculum, written by Barnor Hesse<\/a>, an associate professor of African American studies at Northwestern University in Illinois, claims, \u201cThere is a regime of whiteness, and there are action-oriented white identities.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople who identify with whiteness are one of these,\u2019\u2019 Hesse writes above the eight-point list.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about time we build an ethnography of whiteness, since white people have been the ones writing about and governing Others,\u2019\u2019 Hesse adds.<\/p>\n

In between the two extreme \u201cidentities\u201d of supremacist and abolitionist are such categories as \u201cWhite Voyeurism\u2019\u2019 \u2014 defined as \u201cwouldn\u2019t challenge a white supremacist, desires non-whiteness because it\u2019s interesting\u2019\u2019 \u2014 and \u201cWhite Privilege,\u2019\u2019 or \u201csympathetic to a set of issues but only privately; won\u2019t speak\/act in solidarity publicly because benefitting through whiteness in public (some POC are in this category as well).\u201d<\/p>\n

The handout was accompanied by a color-coordinated meter with the red zone on the left titled \u201cWhite Supremacist\u2019\u2019 and the green zone on the far right labeled \u201cWhite Abolitionist.\u201d<\/p>\n

A New York City Department of Education official told The Post that some parents at the school, which caters to sixth- through 12-graders on the Lower East Side, first shared the material with staff.<\/p>\n

The principal then disseminated it to every parent \u201cas part of a series<\/a> of materials meant for reflection\u201d and as \u201cfood for thought,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n

A DOE rep said in a statement, \u201cAnti-racism and the celebration of diversity is at the core of our work on behalf of the young people of New York City, and the East Side Community School\u2019s students, parents and staff partner together to advance equity in their community. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe document in question was shared with the school by parents as a part of ongoing anti-racist work in the school community and is one of many resources the schools utilizes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The spokesman said school workers are now being threatened over the missive. <\/p>\n

\u201cOur staff are now being targeted with vile racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic slurs and degrading language from people outside of their school and nothing justifies the abuse directed at our educators,\u201d the rep said.<\/p>\n

Christopher Rufo of the Discovery Institute <\/a>wrote in a tweet<\/a> that included a posting of the curriculum, \u201cThis is the new language of public education.\u201d<\/p>\n

The dissemination of Hesse\u2019s literature to parents comes as the DOE and schools chancellor Richard Carranza have pushed to eliminate what they call current administrators\u2019 \u201cwhite-supremacy culture.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

The administration has embraced \u201canti-bias training\u201d across the board, with staffers forced to attend slide-show presentations denouncing the current culture\u2019s \u201cpaternalism\u201d and \u201cpower hoarding\u201d \u2014 while getting sued over Carranza\u2019s alleged creation of \u201can environment which is hostile toward whites.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rufo\u2019s Feb. 15 tweet drew mixed reactions on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you find this hostile, or unnerving, it\u2019s because you are fearing the loss of power and advantage that your skin colour has afforded you. It\u2019s an agenda to bring true equality,\u201d a Twitter user fired at Rufo over Hesse\u2019s chart.<\/a><\/p>\n

But another writer said, \u201c<\/a>THIS is what a public school spends time and money on? Anti-racism like this is a poison.\u201d<\/p>\n

The racial makeup of the student body at East Side Community was 55 percent Hispanic, 18 percent white, 15 percent black, 10 percent Asian and 2 percent other during the last school year.<\/p>\n

The school\u2019s principal, Mark Federman, declined comment through the Education Department.<\/p>\n

Federman made headlines in 2007 when he tried to prevent the arrest of a student accused of punching a school safety agent.\u00a0 The principal was arrested after scuffling with another agent during the fracas but returned to school later that day.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
