{"id":180474,"date":"2021-02-17T16:30:02","date_gmt":"2021-02-17T13:30:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/new-study-shows-that-men-receive-more-actionable-feedback-than-women-in-the-workplace\/"},"modified":"2021-02-17T16:30:02","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T13:30:02","slug":"new-study-shows-that-men-receive-more-actionable-feedback-than-women-in-the-workplace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/new-study-shows-that-men-receive-more-actionable-feedback-than-women-in-the-workplace\/","title":{"rendered":"#New study shows that men receive more actionable feedback than women in the workplace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#New study shows that men receive more actionable feedback than women in the workplace<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2019\/1-leader.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/hires\/2019\/1-leader.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Credit: CC0 Public Domain\">\n<figure class=\"article-img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800a\/2019\/1-leader.jpg\" alt=\"leader\" title=\"Credit: CC0 Public Domain\" width=\"800\" height=\"480\"\/><figcaption class=\"text-darken text-low-up text-truncate-js text-truncate mt-3\">\n                Credit: CC0 Public Domain<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Published in the Harvard Business Review, the research explored differences in the developmental feedback received by men and women.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-banner first-banner ads-336x280\"><!-- \/4988204\/Phys_Story_InText_Box --><br \/>\n      <\/section>\n<p>Developmental feedback\u2014provided informally or through official management processes\u2014is one of employees&#8217; few explicit opportunities to learn about how they should change and develop as a leader, and as such it plays a major role in paving the way to leadership.<\/p>\n<p>The research was co-authored by Dr. Elena Doldor, Associate Professor in Organisational Behaviour and Co-Director of the Centre for Research in Equality and Diversity at Queen Mary&#8217;s School of Business and Management.<\/p>\n<p>Using computerized text analysis, the authors examined comments provided anonymously to 146 mid-career leaders, by more than 1,000 of peers and leaders while taking part in a leadership development program. <\/p>\n<p><b>Key differences in framing advice <\/b><\/p>\n<p>The researchers found four key differences in how advice was framed for female leaders and for male leaders:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vision: men were encouraged to focus on &#8216;the big picture&#8217; and on setting a vision; women were encouraged to focus on operational delivery and narrow expertise<\/li>\n<li>Political skills: men were encouraged to pro-actively leverage workplace politics; women were encouraged to cope with politics and &#8216;toughen up&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Asserting leadership: men were encouraged to claim their space in pursuing leadership ambitions, women were advised to be cooperative and get along with their team<\/li>\n<li>Confidence: men were advised to develop confidence in specific skill sets, whilst women were described as inherently lacking confidence and told to be generically more confident.<\/li>\n<li>The findings show that feedback provided to women was therefore less actionable and less useful for leadership progression than feedback given to men.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Mitigating bias<\/b><\/p>\n<p>According to the researchers, this subtle bias can be mitigated through deliberate action. To make developmental feedback more gender-inclusive, managers must scrutinize the messages they communicate in that feedback. By refocusing developmental conversations in the four key areas of bias outlined, managers can begin to overcome their unconscious biases and more effectively support the leadership development of both men and women.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Elena Doldor said: &#8220;Visionary and political skills are essential for progression into senior leadership.
