href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-economy-gdp-goldman\/goldman-sachs-nudges-u-s-growth-forecast-higher-on-biden-stimulus-plan-idUSKBN29L0QW\" class=\"icon none\">Goldman Sachs projects<\/a>. After that things get tougher for President Joe Biden, and he will be hard pressed to match President Donald Trump\u2019s record on inequality.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Work from home and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/pandemic-speeds-americans-embrace-of-digital-commerce-11605436200?mod=hp_lead_pos5\" class=\"icon none\">enhanced digital platforms<\/a>\u00a0are forcing airline employees, waiters, retail clerks and other low-wage workers into job markets that pay less, require relocation or\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/long-term-unemployment-poses-rising-risk-to-the-economy-11601652449?st=4pz140ojsj634mz&amp;reflink=article_email_share\" class=\"icon none\">offer too few employment opportunities<\/a>. Office buildings, storefronts, aircraft and other assets must be scr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed or repurposed at significant cost.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s reorientation of the U.S. economy\u2014<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/biden-to-suspendnew-federal-oil-and-gas-leasing-11611672331\" class=\"icon none\">slowing oil and gas well and pipeline development<\/a>\u00a0and raising the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2021-01-26\/biden-climate-regulation-to-get-boost-from-carbon-cost\" class=\"icon none\">social cost of carbon used<\/a>\u00a0to set environmental regulations\u2014will leave still more workers and assets stranded.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stimulus_wont_cut_it\"><\/span>Stimulus won\u2019t cut it<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Tax cuts and stimulus payments can\u2019t rescue most of those people and businesses, and the Federal Reserve has run the string on easy-money policies.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/covid-19-pandemic-drives-municipal-borrowing-to-10-year-high-11610447402\" class=\"icon none\">Municipalities<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-18\/biden-s-plans-for-recovery-face-corporate-america-debt-problem\" class=\"icon none\">businesses<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2020\/06\/federal-reserve-enabled-a-coronavirus-junk-bond-boom\" class=\"icon none\">often with questionable credit ratings<\/a>, are feasting on cheap debt to survive pandemic shutdowns but many\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/more-high-yield-muni-borrowers-are-defaulting-but-investors-still-want-in-11605272400\" class=\"icon none\">lack credible plans to right their finances<\/a>\u00a0afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Tesla<br \/>\n        TSLA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203558040\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.44%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       sold\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-01-02\/tesla-delivers-499-550-electric-cars-in-2020-just-shy-of-target\" class=\"icon none\">nearly 500,000 electric vehicles<\/a>, whereas Ford\u2019s<br \/>\n        F,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208911460\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.79%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/09\/09\/moodys-downgrades-ford-credit-rating-to-junk-status.html\" class=\"icon none\">bonds have been downgraded to junk status<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If the Fed raises interest rates as unemployment falls, it would instigate business failures that push high-tax local governments into budget crises that instigate self-defeating cycles of even higher taxes, business and middle-class flight, more empty offices and store fronts and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/public-transit-agencies-slash-services-staff-as-coronavirus-keeps-ridership-low-11606582853?mod=hp_lead_pos7\" class=\"icon none\">decaying transit systems<\/a>\u00a0and schools.<\/p>\n<p>If the Fed continues to enable foreign borrowing to finance companies and cities at rock-bottom rates, profligate borrowing\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/beijings-bid-for-financial-supremacy-11609785257\" class=\"icon none\">will erode<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-01-16\/eu-draft-sets-out-plans-to-limit-u-s-dollar-reliance-ft\" class=\"icon none\">dollar\u2019s status<\/a>\u00a0<br \/>\n        BUXX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210673925\/realtime\" class=\"positive\">+0.31%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       as the global reserve currency. America could become vulnerable to a debt crisis as multinationals and foreign central banks slow purchases of dollar-denominated securities.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dignified_work\"><\/span>Dignified work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Firing up growth in an economy that offers dignified work for all workers requires microeconomic solutions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Near term, promoting more\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-companies-turn-to-german-training-model-to-fill-jobs-gap-1474911069\" class=\"icon none\">business-based<\/a>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/companies-seek-to-fill-skills-gap-by-retraining-their-own-workers-11552041000\" class=\"icon none\">training programs<\/a>\u00a0and a skills-based immigration policy would drive high-tech growth,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/evonomics.com\/why-immigration-drives-innovation\/\" class=\"icon none\">enable innovation generally<\/a>\u00a0and create jobs in new locations for the sandwich makers, accountants and other service providers displaced from New York\u2019s and California\u2019s collapsing civil fabrics.<\/p>\n<p>Those would include\u00a0enhanced unemployment benefits linked to reskilling programs,\u00a0making\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2016-05-16\/moving-americans-out-of-poverty\" class=\"icon none\">social benefits<\/a>\u00a0such as  housing subsidies\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2021-01-12\/the-u-s-should-invest-in-the-jobs-of-the-future\" class=\"icon none\">transferrable across state lines<\/a>\u00a0and federal funding for relocation stipends\u2014all would be unsettling for Republicans. And rethinking the thicket of\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2019-04-16\/arizona-s-universal-licensing-recognition-is-a-step-forward\" class=\"icon none\">state licensing requirements<\/a>\u00a0that impeded interstate mobility of skilled professionals and technicians\u2014that would upset Biden\u2019s union constituencies.<\/p>\n<p>Longer term, progress requires repurposing high schools toward digital trades and\u00a0raising the U.S. fertility rate\u2014<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macrotrends.net\/countries\/USA\/united-states\/fertility-rate\" class=\"icon none\">now at 1.8<\/a>\u2014to sustain our labor force and support for the elderly. Conversations about how families and workplaces are structured to encourage larger families reaches deeply into personal choices and private business practices that progressives and conservatives alike would find discomforting.<\/p>\n<p>Along with a better skilled and sustainable labor force, greater investments in infrastructure and intellectual capital are needed For decades,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2019-06\/RDGDP.png\" class=\"icon none\">federal support for R&amp;D has been declining<\/a>, while\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/china-looks-to-close-technology-gap-with-u-s-1524316953\" class=\"icon none\">China offers more subsidies to technology c<\/a>hampions.<\/p>\n<p>Allocating more funds to R&amp;D is easy\u2014if the Federal Reserve can print money for stimulus checks, it could instead print money to build better roads and finance university and industry research\u2014but spending effectively is another matter.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bidens_choices\"><\/span>Biden\u2019s choices<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Biden\u2019s choices for his economic team were driven through\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theindependent.com\/opinion\/columnists\/joe-biden-s-climate-change-litmus-test\/article_dba6cf24-4a66-11eb-922d-fb15d92f9829.html\" class=\"icon none\">climate change<\/a>, pro-union and diversity screens, and their perceptions of the Trump years and what needs to be done can result in policies that poorly allocate capital\u2014just as the Trump team had its lens for progress.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the election,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/whchronicle.com\/bidens-environmental-plan-needs-a-reality-check\/?utm_source=Llewellyn+King+Column+Mailing+List&amp;utm_campaign=320e6d3589-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_01_25_COPY_01&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_ef8bd218a2-320e6d3589-341575885\" class=\"icon none\">American utilities were already racing<\/a>\u00a0to build wind, solar and battery storage, and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-mounts-a-charge-to-take-on-china-the-king-of-electric-vehicle-batteries-11611658235\" class=\"icon none\">the auto industry rushing to improve battery design and increase production capacity to support EV production<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/green-euphoria-may-cost-investors-but-planet-says-thank-you-11609949560\" class=\"icon none\">Surging stock prices are making capital terribly cheap for green businesses<\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the Obama administration, industrial policy\u2014as epitomized by\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/08\/07\/us\/delays-persist-for-us-high-speed-rail.html?_r=0\" class=\"icon none\">high-speed rail<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/remember-solyndra-loss-of-taxpayer-millions-seems-forgotten-expert-says\" class=\"icon none\">Solyndra<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052702304791704577420350163856824?mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">car batteries<\/a>\u2014posted a discouraging record. During the Biden years, investing more rapidly in green technologies faster than <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> is advancing could leave us with obsolete facilities five or 10 years from now and even bigger growth headaches.<\/p>\n<p>From 2016 to 2019,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-incomes-up-poverty-rate-down-in-2019-11600180606\" class=\"icon none\">poverty dropped sharply<\/a>\u00a0to its lowest level since 1959.
