Roku is looking to beef up its original shows and movies<\/a> after buying the library of the now-defunct Quibi mobile-video app<\/a>. <\/p>\n

According to a January job listing, the streaming stick-maker was looking to hire a \u201clead production attorney\u201d to work on its \u201cexpanding slate of original content.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roku did not respond to requests seeking comment on the listing, which also focuses on \u201coriginal episodic and feature length productions,\u201d covering various aspects of production deals like hiring actors, writers, directors and individual producers.<\/p>\n

The push into originals has come just weeks after Roku inked a deal to acquire Quibi\u2019s library of star-studded short-form shows, featuring Kevin Hart, Idris Elba, Jennifer Lopez and Nick Jonas. Roku said it plans to stream those shows for free in 2021 on the Roku Channel, its own free-to-watch app, which currently broadcasts other companies\u2019 movies and shows along with ads.<\/p>\n

Roku paid \u201csignificantly\u201d less than $100 million under the deal with Quibi, the well-financed startup led by Hollywood mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg and former Hewlett-Packard chief executive Meg Whitman that shut down six months after launching after failing to gain traction.<\/p>\n

Roku\u2019s recent job listing, which is no longer accepting applicants, said that Roku is seeking a lawyer with \u201csubstantial experience in television and film production either at a studio, network, streaming service or entertainment law firm,\u201d as well as experience working with Hollywood guilds and unions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Roku has been laser-focused on growing its customer base during the pandemic, a time when people are streaming more content than ever. <\/p>\n

The company reported preliminary data for the fourth-quarter last month, adding that new distribution deals with Peacock and\u00a0HBO Max\u00a0helped it add 14 million new accounts, amounting to a 39 percent rise over the prior year period. The company said it logged 51 million new accounts in the quarter, putting it neck putting it neck-and-neck with rival Amazon Fire TV.<\/p>\n

Roku will report its finalized fourth-quarter results this Thursday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
