Veteran New York Times reporter Donald McNeil Jr. blasted students for having \u201crecovered memories\u201d of the 2019 Peru trip<\/a> that led to his resignation, according to a new email.<\/p>\n

McNeil, who allegedly dropped the N-word and made other disparaging remarks during the trip with students, defended himself to friends in a private email obtained by the Daily Beast<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m amazed at what\u2019s happ<\/a>ening. I feel like I\u2019m facing students \u2018recovered memories\u2019 from two years ago,\u201d McNeil wrote in the email sent this week. \u201cAnd other papers are eating it up. I said \u2018racism is over?\u2019 Huh?\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cI said \u2018ghetto\u2019? I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve said \u2018ghetto\u2019 except 1. about Warsaw or 2. ironically, with air quotes, since Elvis released that ridiculous song in 1969.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA teenager \u2018corrected\u2019 me and was upset that I failed to apologize to her\/him? I don\u2019t even know how to respond to that. Somehow I think I\u2019d remember it if it had happened,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

The email comes after one of the trip\u2019s participants, Sophie Shepherd, told the Times that the journalist engaged in a heated conversation with her in which he declared \u201cracism is over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shepherd recalled that he made the offensive remark when she mentioned that her favorite class at Massachusetts\u2019 Phillips Academy Andover had covered racial discrimination within the American education system.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s frustrating, because black Americans keep blaming the system, but racism is over,\u201d Shepherd recalled McNeill saying in a Times piece published Sunday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing against them anymore \u2014 they can get out of the ghetto if they want to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Complaints about McNeil\u2019s conduct on the trip resurfaced last month in a report in the Daily Beast<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would change the journalist. He was a racist,\u201d one participant told the travel company that partnered with the Times for the trip. \u201cHe used the \u2018N\u2019 word, said horrible things about black teenagers, and said white supremacy doesn\u2019t exist.\u201d<\/p>\n

McNeil, who has been with the Times since 1976,\u00a0submitted his resignation on Feb. 5, admitting in a statement\u00a0that he used a \u201cracial slur.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the reporter\u00a0said that he will not be discussing the incident until his resignation becomes official on March 1.<\/p>\n

In the email shared this week, he told friends that he is \u201cwriting out long answers to everything\u201d \u2014 which he vowed to finish by his official resignation date.<\/p>\n

McNeil couldn\u2019t immedia<\/a>tely be reached Wednesday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
