{"id":180920,"date":"2021-02-17T23:34:07","date_gmt":"2021-02-17T20:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/facebook-blocks-news-sharing-in-australia\/"},"modified":"2021-02-17T23:34:07","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T20:34:07","slug":"facebook-blocks-news-sharing-in-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/facebook-blocks-news-sharing-in-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"#Facebook blocks news-sharing in Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> blocks <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>-sharing in Australia<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/02\/facebook-blocks-aussy-news.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Facebook said Wednesday it is banning Australian users from reading or sharing news on its platform. <\/p>\n<p>The stunning decision is a response to Australia\u2019s proposed new Media Bargaining law, requiring tech platforms to pay news outlets for their content.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook\u2019s decision means Australian news publishers will no longer be able to share stories on the social media site, and international news won\u2019t be visible or shareable by local Facebook users, while overseas Facebook users also won\u2019t be able to read or share Australian content. <\/p>\n<p>Facebook Australia and New Zealand managing director William Easton defended the decision on the media giant\u2019s blog. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proposed law fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between our platform and publishers who use it to share news content,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has left us facing a stark choice: attempt to comply with a law that ignores the realities of this relationship, or stop allowing news content on our services in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith a heavy heart, we are choosing the latter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move sets a precedent for how Facebook could handle other global efforts to force it to pay news publishers for their content.<\/p>\n<p>Australian lawmakers have said they would avoid passing the\u00a0new law\u00a0if Google and Facebook reached payment terms with Australian news publishers on their own.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook\u2019s announcement comes just hours after rival Google, which was also subject to the same law, announced it struck a\u00a0multiyear deal\u00a0with News Corp., the largest owner of newspapers by circulation in Australia, to pay for its content.<\/p>\n<p>News Corp. is also the parent company of the New York Post, and publishes the Wall Street Journal, Barron\u2019s and MarketWatch in addition to numerous newspapers overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Easton noted that Facebook\u2019s business gain from news is minimal, as it makes up less than 4 percent of the content people see in their News Feed.<\/p>\n<p>He also said that \u201cjournalism is important to a democratic society,\u201d which is why Facebook was prepared to launch Facebook News in Australia and \u201csignificantly increase\u201d its investments with \u201clocal publishers\u201d \u2014 but only \u201cwith the right rules in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis legislation sets a precedent where the government decides who enters into these news content agreements, and ultimately, how much the party that already receives value from the free service gets paid,\u201d Easton added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will now prioritize investments to other countries, as part of our plans to invest in new licensing news programs and experiences,\u201d he said.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
