“#NYC churches give to-go packets of ash for Ash Wednesday<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

It\u2019s do-it-yourself repentance.<\/p>\n

Churches in the Big App<\/a>le\u00a0got creative on Ash Wednesday to avoid spreading the coronavirus \u2014\u00a0 in some cases offering to-go packets of priest-blessed ash for at-home ceremonies, church leaders said.<\/p>\n

Elderly and home-bound worshipers who requested to-go packets of the burned bits were allowed to draw their own charcoal-colored forehead crosses to mark the beginning of Lent, a rep for the Diocese of Brooklyn<\/a> told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re taking them home to administer a marking of the cross on your forehead, that\u2019s something people are comfortable with and know how to do,\u201d said spokesman John Quaglione, adding the packets were doled with no directions needed.<\/p>\n

Catholic priests across the city also opted to administer the symbolic marking by dipping a Q-tip in ashes \u2014 instead of a finger \u2014 or sprinkling it on parishioners\u2019 heads to avoid touching them, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt limits contact and helps priests avoid having to use Purell between every marking,\u201d Quaglione said.<\/p>\n

Changing the religious tradition actually has some perks, Quaglione said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole basis of Lent is to do things humbly \u2014 to do good and not necessarily look for praise,\u201d he said. \u201cRight now I have ashes on my head and you can\u2019t see them; it\u2019s really more of a secret than it has been in the past. We did that way, it actually goes along well with the teachings of Lent.\u201d<\/p>\n
