At times he attempted to style himself as a tortured artist with strange stunts like the \u201cI\u2019m not famous anymore\u201d bag over his head or penning the film <em>Honey Boy<\/em> explaining his difficult childhood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: Celebrity Scandals of 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But behind the \u201cbrooding genius\u201d mask hid much more sinister and often painful impulses. (c) Rachel Worth\/WENN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 2007, a young Shia was shedding the Disney image in a string of high profile projects like <em>Disturbia<\/em> and the <em>Transformers<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>, and a <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em> hosting gig that will live on in history for his appearance in the iconic \u201cDear Sister\u201d digital short.<\/p>\n<p>This year also marked his first run-in with the law when he was arrested for refusing to leave a Walgreens. The security guard, who attempted to evict the rising star from the store, described him as drunk, and Shia was eventually charged with criminal trespassing.<\/p>\n<p>The charges were later dropped, and he explained in an interview with <strong>David Letterman<\/strong> that the incident happened amidst his 21st birthday celebrations. In February 2013, he exited his first Broadway production, <em>Orphans<\/em>, after \u201ccreative differences\u201d with co-star <strong>Alec Baldwin<\/strong>. (It wouldn\u2019t be the last time butting heads with his collaborators would cost Shia a job.)<\/p>\n<p>For whatever reason, the then-27-year-old decided to post his apology to Alec on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a><\/strong>. Even more strangely, some users noticed that the apology itself was lifted in part from a 2009 <em>Esquire<\/em> article \u201cWhat Is A Man?\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">creative differences <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/d8xvV2Hr\">pic.twitter.com\/d8xvV2Hr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Shia LaBeouf (@thecampaignbook) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thecampaignbook\/status\/304329020831592448?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 20, 2013<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The <em>Esquire<\/em> writer was gracious about it (\u201cIt actually makes me happy that my words were some succor to the kid\u201d), but that wasn\u2019t the last of Shia\u2019s copycat ways. Months later, his short film <em>HowardCantour.com<\/em> hit the internet, and fans quickly realized it was essentially an unauthorized adaptation of a graphic novel by author <strong>Daniel Clowes<\/strong>. Shia then plagiarized another apology, this time cribbing from <strong>Yahoo Answers<\/strong>, of all places. He ended up in a legal back-and-forth with Clowes sending a cease and desist and the actor threatening to release a new film that also stole from the artist\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>This kerfuffle had some observers returning to Shia\u2019s past work, and unsurprisingly, they found yet more instances of plagiarism. Specifically, his books <em>Let\u2019s F**king Party<\/em> and <em>Stale N Mate<\/em> stole lines directly from writers like <strong>Charles Bukowski<\/strong> and <strong>Benoit Duteurtre<\/strong>. Afterwards, he apologized by\u2026 you guessed it\u2026 tweeting a bunch of plagiarized apology quotes, from the likes of <strong>Kanye West<\/strong>, <strong>Tiger Woods<\/strong>, <strong>Mark Zuckerberg<\/strong> and more.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2014-second-arrest-at-cabaret\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2014_Second_Arrest_At_Cabaret\"><\/span>2014: Second Arrest At Cabaret<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shia LaBeouf on His Arrest\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jtAkNf_b_TM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Shia was arrested once again in 2014, and this time, he couldn\u2019t hide behind the excuse of a birthday gone rowdy. He attended a performance of <em>Cabaret<\/em> starring <strong>Michelle Williams<\/strong> and <strong>Alan Cumming<\/strong>, where he reportedly made loud remarks during the production, began smoking inside the theater, and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly acted in a manner super inappropriate for the audience of a stage show. When the police were called over his drunken disruptions, his behavior escalated, allegedly even hurling slurs at the arresting officers. (This ends up being a pattern of Shia\u2019s.)<\/p>\n<p>Somehow, the artist managed to put a jovial spin on the story during a later appearance on <em>Jimmy Kimmel Live<\/em>. His explanation was, basically, that he was so drunk he didn\u2019t even know where he was. (As far as excuses go, this is not a great one.) He was so confused, in fact, that he got up and even physically interacted with the actors, including Alan Cumming.<\/p>\n<p>He shared:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI give him a slap on the ass, because I think he deserves it. He\u2019s seducing me, he\u2019s the sexiest man I\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sooooo\u2026 yeah, not only was his behavior totally disruptive, that seems like an admission of sexual assault by today\u2019s standards. Alan\u2019s response, speaking to <strong>Conan O\u2019Brien<\/strong>, was remarkably gracious:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019ve all done things where we\u2019ve been out of it and messed up. The clip captured a heated argument between the two that seemed like it could escalate dangerously before locals intervened.<\/p>\n<p>He told the men:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to touch a woman, I don\u2019t want to hit a woman, but I\u2019m being pushed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Addressing Goth, he said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI don\u2019t wanna touch you. I don\u2019t wanna be aggressive. In fact, his next arrest took place at one of his art installations called <em>He Will Not Divide Us<\/em>. Beginning on the first day of <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2019s presidency in January, the installation involved a camera set up outside New York City\u2019s Museum of the Moving Image. Passersby were encouraged to speak on the livestream and often chanted \u201che will not divide us\u201d alongside LaBeouf.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the exhibit also attracted the attention of white supremacists and neo-Nazis who came to troll the well-meaning crowd. Some of Shia\u2019s altercations with these unsavory characters were captured on the livestream, including a face-off with a man who said \u201cHitler did nothing wrong\u201d into the camera. In one instance in April, Shia verbally assaulted a bartender in a California bowling alley, calling him a \u201cf**king racist bitch\u201d in video obtained by TMZ. Security was forced to escort him out of the building.<\/p>\n<p>Later that year, he was arrested once again while in Savannah, Georgia during filming of <em>The Peanut Butter Falcon<\/em>. The actor unwisely approached a police officer looking for a cigarette, and began verbally berating him. He was subsequently arrested for intoxication, disorderly conduct, and obstruction.<\/p>\n<p>In bodycam footage of the arrest released by <em>TMZ<\/em>, Shia continued to verbally abuse the police, singling out the Black officer involved in the arrest. In a ridiculous tirade that oozed white privilege, he complained about having paid his taxes threatened that he would \u201cblow [their] s**t up\u201d if he had a gun. He ranted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAnd you put your own kind in a f**king pen, for nothing. You put a white man in a pen for what, you f**king bitch? (A music vid which, BTW, courted its own controversy, serving as one of the reasons he was fired from <strong>Olivia Wilde<\/strong>\u2018s film <em>Don\u2019t Worry Darling<\/em>.) Coming off the success of 2019\u2019s <em>Honey Boy<\/em>, his image had been truly rehabilitated.<\/p>\n<p>The positive press came to an abrupt halt in December of 2020 when ex-girlfriend FKA Twigs came forward to accuse him of abuse. In a lawsuit filed in conjunction with another Shia ex, <strong>Karolyn Pho<\/strong>. The allegations against him included physical violence, choking and head-butting his partners, as well as psychological torture like sleep deprivation and imposing \u201crules\u201d for how often his partners had to show physical affection.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to the <em>New York Times<\/em>, which first published the allegations, Shia claimed \u201cmany of these allegations are not true.\u201d But, he said that he owed his accusers \u201cthe opportunity to air their statements publicly and accept accountability for those things I have done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI am not cured of my PTSD and alcoholism, but I am committed to doing what I need to do to recover, and I will forever be sorry to the people that I may have harmed along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Shia eventually checked himself into an inpatient facility and \u201cparted ways\u201d with his agency, CAA.
