{"id":181000,"date":"2021-02-18T01:01:44","date_gmt":"2021-02-17T22:01:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/teeth-from-siberian-mammoths-yield-oldest-dna-ever-recovered\/"},"modified":"2021-02-18T01:01:44","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T22:01:44","slug":"teeth-from-siberian-mammoths-yield-oldest-dna-ever-recovered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/teeth-from-siberian-mammoths-yield-oldest-dna-ever-recovered\/","title":{"rendered":"#Teeth from Siberian mammoths yield oldest DNA ever recovered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Teeth from Siberian mammoths yield oldest DNA ever recovered<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>WASHINGTON \u2013 Scientists have recovered the oldest DNA on record, extracting it from the molars of mammoths that roamed northeastern Siberia up to 1.2 million years ago in research that broadens the horizons for understanding extinct species.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers said on Wednesday they had recovered and sequenced DNA from the remains of three individual mammoths \u2013 elephant cousins that were among the large mammals that dominated Ice Age landscapes \u2013 entombed in permafrost conditions conducive to preservation of ancient genetic material.<\/p>\n<p>While the remains were discovered starting in the 1970s, new scientific methods were needed to extract the DNA.<\/p>\n<p>The oldest of the three, discovered near the Krestovka river, was <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roximately 1.2 million years old. Another, from near the Adycha river, was approximately 1 to 1.2 million years old. By way of comparison, our species, Homo sapiens, first appeared roughly 300,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>DNA is the self-replicating material that carries genetic information in living organisms \u2013 sort of a blueprint of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis DNA was extremely degraded into very small pieces, and so we had to sequence many billions of ultra-short DNA sequences in order to puzzle these genomes together,\u201d Dal\u00e9n said.<\/p>\n<p>Most knowledge about prehistoric creatures comes from studying skeletal fossils, but there is a limit to what these can tell about an organism, particularly relating to genetic relationships and traits.<\/p>\n<p>Ancient DNA can help fill in the blanks but is highly perishable. Morphological analyses on bones and teeth usually only allow researchers to study a handful of characteristics in the fossils, whereas with genomics we are analyzing many tens of thousands of characteristics,\u201d Dal\u00e9n said.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers gained insights into mammoth evolution and migration by comparing the DNA to that of mammoths that lived more recently.
