“#Should the Potential New ‘NCIS’ Spinoff Set in Hawaii Be Introduced as a Backdoor Pilot?<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The world of NCIS<\/em><\/a> \u2014 which began with JAG<\/em><\/a> (1995-2005) \u2014 may be expanding.<\/p>\n

CBS is considering ordering a fourth series<\/a> in the procedural franchise, NCIS: Hawaii<\/em>, but its characters won\u2019t necessarily be introduced on one of the other three (NCIS<\/em>, Los Angeles<\/em><\/a>, and New Orleans<\/em><\/a>) as a backdoor pilot first, according to Deadline<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how we\u2019ve met those in the previous series. JAG<\/em>\u2018s Season 8 episodes \u201cIce Queen\u201d and \u201cMeltdown\u201d included guest spots from Mark Harmon<\/a> (Leroy Jethro Gibbs), Michael Weatherly<\/a> (Tony DiNozzo), David McCallum<\/a> (Dr. Donald \u201cDucky\u201d Mallard), and Pauley Perrette<\/a> (Abby Sciuto), all of whom went on to star on NCIS<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Los Angeles<\/em>\u2018 Chris O\u2019Donnell<\/a> (Callen), LL Cool J<\/a> (Sam Hanna), Daniela Ruah<\/a> (Kensi Blye), Peter Cambor (Nate Getz), and Barrett Foa<\/a> (Eric Beale) app<\/a>eared in NCIS<\/em> Season 6\u2019s two-parter \u201cLegend\u201d. We first met New Orleans<\/em>\u2018 Scott Bakula<\/a> (Dwayne Pride), Lucas Black<\/a> (Christopher Lasalle), Zoe McLellan<\/a> (Meredith Brody), and CCH Pounder (Dr. Loretta Wade) in NCIS<\/em> Season 11\u2019s two-parter \u201cCrescent City.\u201d<\/p>\n

NCIS: LA<\/em> was used to introduce the potential Red<\/em> spinoff in Season 4, with guest stars John Corbett<\/a> (Roy Haines), Kim Raver<\/a> (Paris Summerskill), Scott Grimes<\/a> (Dave Flynn), Edwin Hodge<\/a> (Kai Ashe), Gillian Alexy (Claire Keats), and Kenneth Mitchell (Danny Gallagher) as the mobile team. That was never ordered to series, though Grimes\u2019 Flynn has appeared on LA<\/em> on his own to help out the team since.<\/p>\n

Is a backdoor pilot necessary, especially in a franchise as successful as NCIS<\/em> and when something like production and scheduling could be a factor right now due to the pandemic? Probably not. Sure, this potential series would be set on the island, but by now, viewers know what to expect from one of these shows. There is something unique about each \u2014 for example, you know you\u2019ll get plenty of explosions on NCIS: Los Angeles<\/em> \u2014 but they\u2019re all still procedurals and Hawaii<\/em> would have a home-base, unlike Red<\/em>, the premise of which would have made it a bit different. Have Director Vance (Rocky Carroll<\/a>) from NCIS<\/em> video in early on and that could be enough to connect the series to the rest of the franchise.<\/p>\n

But that doesn\u2019t mean there can\u2019t be some type of crossover at some point in the season. After all, this potential NCIS: Hawaii<\/em> would be joining a universe that includes the currently-airing Magnum P.I.<\/em><\/a> (which also takes place on the island) and MacGyver<\/em><\/a> and already-over Hawaii Five-0<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Of course, NCIS: Hawaii<\/em> has to be ordered to series first, which has not happened yet. But with the success of NCIS<\/em> (currently in its 18th season), Los Angeles<\/em> (in its 12th), and New Orleans<\/em> (in its seventh), it isn\u2019t surprising this is even just a possibility.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
