Roughly one-third of US military members have declined to get vaccinated for COVID-19, a Pentagon official said in a report Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Air Force Maj. Gen. Jeff Taliaferro, the Joint Staff\u2019s vice director for operations,\u00a0told a congressional panel that \u201cacceptance rates are somewhere in the two-thirds territory,\u201d according to the Daily Beast<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While the vaccine is \u201cclearly safe for service members,\u201d soldiers need education \u201cto help them understand the benefits\u201d of the shots, he told the House Armed Services Committee.<\/p>\n

In total, the Defense Department has fully vaccinated 147,000 service members and 359,000\u00a0have received a first dose, Pentagon official Robert Salesses told the outlet.<\/p>\n

Those who have declined can still be deployed, Taliaferro said. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve already demonstrated over the last year that we\u2019re fully capable of operating in a COVID environment,\u201d he said, according to Inside Defense.<\/a> <\/p>\n

Officials said they expect all Department of Defense personnel \u2014 which also includes civilians and contractors \u2014 will be vaccinated by late July or early August, the site reported.<\/p>\n

At least 235,258 people in the department have been infected with COVID-19 in the past year, according to a Military.com tally<\/a>, with many of the worst outbreaks happ<\/a>ening aboard Navy ships \u2014 including the USS Theodore Roosevelt, where hundreds of sailors got the bug last year.<\/p>\n

The military acceptance rate of the vaccine is on par with the general<\/a> population of the US, according to a journal of Social<\/a> Science<\/a> & Medicine study, which found that 31 percent of the general population don\u2019t plan on getting vaccinated. <\/p>\n

An earlier study found that up to 51 percent of Americans would refuse the shots.<\/p>\n

A rep for the Pentagon\u00a0didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
