{"id":181242,"date":"2021-02-18T05:52:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-18T02:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/nyc-waitress-says-she-was-fired-for-not-getting-covid-vaccine\/"},"modified":"2021-02-18T05:52:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-18T02:52:00","slug":"nyc-waitress-says-she-was-fired-for-not-getting-covid-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/nyc-waitress-says-she-was-fired-for-not-getting-covid-vaccine\/","title":{"rendered":"#NYC waitress says she was fired for not getting COVID vaccine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#NYC waitress says she was fired for not getting COVID vaccine<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A New York City waitress says she was fired from a popular Brooklyn restaurant after choosing not to get the COVID-19 vaccine for fear it might hurt her chances of getting pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>Bonnie Jacobson, 34, told The Post that the management at Red Hook Tavern canned her on Monday because she balked at getting the shot im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was shocking to me,\u201d she said Wednesday. \u201cI went through the stages: I\u2019m hurt, I\u2019m in shock \u2014 then I got mad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jacobson, who has been married since October 2019, stressed that she\u2019s not an anti-vaxxer and \u201cfully supports\u201d people being inoculated, but said she wants to wait for more research on the coronavirus vaccine\u2019s possible effects on fertility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way I see it, getting the vaccine is for me. It protects me. If I am not getting it, it\u2019s my choice, and I\u2019d only be hurting myself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The coronavirus vaccines available haven\u2019t been tested on pregnant women, but also haven\u2019t been shown to affect pregnancy and are viewed as <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly safe.<\/p>\n<p>The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/recommendations\/pregnancy.html#:~:text=Routine%20testing%20and%20pregnancy,an%20mRNA%20COVID%2D19%20vaccine.\">says that<\/a> getting vaccinated is \u201ca personal choice for people who are pregnant\u201d and that expecting mothers can speak to their doctors about whether it\u2019s right for them.<\/p>\n<p>Restaurant staffers in New York joined the list of people eligible for the shot earlier this month. <\/p>\n<p>Not long after, management at the buzzy Brooklyn eatery emailed staffers to let them know they were eligible, and later said the vaccine would be \u201cmandatory\u201d for all employees.<\/p>\n<p>The only exception to the policy would be, \u201cIf your own personal health or disability prohibits you from obtaining this vaccination,\u201d read the Friday email, reviewed by The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Jacobson \u2014 who began working at the restaurant in August after being let go from women\u2019s co-working space The Wing in the beginning of the pandemic \u2014 responded that she was \u201cchoosing not to get the vaccine because there just isn\u2019t enough data or research at this point on its effects on fertility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce there is more research to support that it does not affect fertility I would reconsider my position,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>But on Monday, after having worked a 13-hour shift on Sunday for Valentine\u2019s Day, Jacobson learned she was getting booted over her choice.<\/p>\n<p>Tavern management wrote to her saying that while they respected her choice, getting the shot was required and that \u201cat this time your employment will be terminated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are sad to see you go,\u201d the email said. \u201cIf you do change your mind, please do not hesitate to let us know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jacobson said she felt blindsided. <\/p>\n<p>She noted that she\u2019d toiled for the restaurant through the pandemic and learned to adapt to coronavirus restrictions, such as working outside \u201cin the freezing cold.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been trooping along with them,\u201d she said. \u201cI was expecting to be met by the same flexibility and compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"Bonnie Jacobson was fired from Red Hook Tavern for not getting vaccinated for COVID-19.\" class=\"wp-image-17349973 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/02\/red-hook-vaccine.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/02\/red-hook-vaccine.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/02\/red-hook-vaccine.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/02\/red-hook-vaccine.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/02\/red-hook-vaccine.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Bonnie Jacobson was fired from Red Hook Tavern for not getting vaccinated for COVID-19.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">William C. Lopez\/NYPOST<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While, the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/wysk\/what-you-should-know-about-covid-19-and-ada-rehabilitation-act-and-other-eeo-laws?utm_content=&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_name=&amp;utm_source=govdelivery&amp;utm_term=\">in December said<\/a> companies could require workers to get vaccinated against COVID-19, employment lawyers said they hadn\u2019t heard of a case like Jacobson\u2019s before, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/brooklyn-woman-fired-from-job-after-not-getting-vaccine-because-she-wanted-to-wait\/2892578\/\">according to WNBC<\/a>, which first reported on her firing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis particular subject is a really hot topic right now,\u201d employment attorney Felicia Ennis told the station, adding, \u201cI haven\u2019t heard of a company taking that extreme of a step.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant on Wednesday said it was still requiring workers to get vaccinated against COVID-19, but said it would change its policy for employees requesting an exemption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce New York state allowed restaurant workers to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, we thought this was the perfect opportunity to put a plan in place to keep our team and guests safe,\u201d owner Billy Durney said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one has faced these challenges before and we made a decision that we thought would best protect everyone,\u201d he said. \u201cWe now realize that we need to update our policy so it\u2019s clear to our team how the process works and what we can do to support them. We\u2019re making these changes immediately.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Jacobson told The Post she doesn\u2019t plan on pursuing legal action and doesn\u2019t want her job back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIts a good restaurant, the food is excellent, the money is great [but] I\u00a0think I want to take a minute for myself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She and her husband, who were married in October 2019 and have been together for nine years, are \u201cfamily planning\u201d and she wants to focus on that, Jacobson said.<\/p>\n<p>Jacobson expressed some hesitation about her choice not to get vaccinated immediately, and said that she would get the shot in the future, \u201conce more data is out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way I see it, maybe I need to be better informed,\u201d she said.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
