The Mets\u2019 leap into becoming more analytical under new owner Steve Cohen is already evident to the field staff.<\/p>\n

After Ben Zauzmer\u2019s recent arrival from the Dodgers to oversee the team\u2019s research and development, manager Luis Rojas and his coaches have received a primer on the systems that will be implemented to provide information.<\/p>\n

The Mets have eliminated the quality control coach position \u2014 Brian Schneider, who held the title last year, has been moved into a different role \u2014 leaving a direct line of communication between the analysts and coaching staff. Rojas served as the quality control coach in 2019, distilling analytical information for the rest of the coaching staff.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe feel pretty comfortable that our analysts and strategists are going to be talking to our coaches,\u201d Rojas said Wednesday. \u201cRight now the digestion of the information is clear. Our coaches learn a lot about the usage of systems and some of the formulas out there, so there is the straight line of communication and now that we have expanded and have more manpower you can see it working already.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noah Syndergaard threw a side session and looked \u201creally good,\u201d according to Rojas. The right-hander, who is just short of 11 months into his rehab from Tommy John surgery, is on schedule for a June return. Robert Gsellman \u201clooked really good,\u201d according to Rojas, in a throwing session as he returns from a fractured rib.<\/p>\n

In addition to defense, Rojas cited controlling the running game<\/a> and better baserunning as two areas of focus in spring training.<\/p>\n

\u201cControlling the running game for the pitchers is important, that is something we haven\u2019t done really well in the last few years,\u201d Rojas said. \u201cWe are facing a tough division, a very fast division and we want to minimize that, we have a new catcher and we are going to encourage our pitchers to be better at that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mets finished in the middle of the pack last season in runs scored, despite leading MLB in batting average. Rojas blames the Mets\u2019 base-running for some of that discrepancy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought we were poor running the bases last year,\u201d he said. \u201cWe got on bases, we hit, but we didn\u2019t maximize our scoring chances by being a better base running team.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
