Mayor Bill de Blasio called for a blue-ribbon panel to investigate Gov. Andrew Cuomo\u2019s handling of nursing homes amid the coronavirus crisis \u2014 saying in a new interview that \u201clives might\u2019ve been saved.\u201d<\/p>\n

During a discussion with the \u201cBloomberg Quint\u201d website, de Blasio agreed with the idea of empaneling an independent \u201cMoreland Commission\u201d in the wake of The Post\u2019s revelation that Cuomo admittedly covered up nursing home deaths from COVID-19.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis whole thing has to be examined. We need the full truth,\u201d the mayor said in the interview published Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s extraordinarily troubling on a human level because we don\u2019t even know what it would\u2019ve meant \u2014 how many lives might\u2019ve been saved if things had been done differently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hizzoner\u2019s latter remarks app<\/a>eared to jibe with those of critics who say the state Health Department\u2019s since-rescinded, March 25 directive for nursing homes to admit COVID-19 patients helped spread the deadly disease among highly vulnerable residents.<\/p>\n

De Blasio also said the need to drill down on what may have gone wrong \u201ccertainly is not just about looking backward.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about looking forward. We need to learn these lessons now \u2014 what happened here and what needs to be different in the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

It seems unlikely, however, that the 1907 Moreland Act will be invoked over the nursing home scandal, as it authorizes New York\u2019s governor to \u201ceither in person or by one or more persons appointed by him for the purpose, to examine and investigate the management and affairs of any department, board, bureau or commission of the state.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2013, Cuomo created a Moreland Commission on Political Corruption but shut it down the following year as part of a deal to pass a package of ethics reforms.<\/p>\n

Then-Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara later seized the panel\u2019s records and used them in successful prosecutions of former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan) and former Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos (R-LI).<\/p>\n

Bharara also investigated what he called Cuomo\u2019s \u201cpremature closing\u201d of the commission, but announced in 2016 that without \u201cadditional proof\u2026there is insufficient evidence to prove a federal crime.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
