Sia\u2019s \u201cMusic\u201d is hitting a very sour note with thousands of online social<\/a> justice warriors.<\/p>\n

The singer-songwriter\u2019s feature directorial debut has already been widely panned\u00a0by critics\u00a0and otherwise concerned viewers, but that hasn\u2019t stopped the masses from rushing to sign a petition to have the film officially condemned by the industry \u2014 by way of removing its two\u00a02021 Golden Globe award nominations.<\/p>\n

The Change.org campaign has already amassed 55,000 signatures since the petition was launched by\u00a0allies of the autism community<\/a>\u00a0last week \u2014 50,000 of which came only in the last 24 hours. Related petitions on the website have also garnered substantial support.<\/p>\n

In \u201cMusic,\u201d starring\u00a0Best Actress Golden Globe nominee Kate Hudson\u00a0and Leslie Odom Jr., former \u201cDance Moms\u201d star Maddie Ziegler plays a nonverbal autistic teenager. Critics take aim primarily with the casting of neurotypical Ziegler, despite the available autistic actors.<\/p>\n

Representatives for the film did not immediately respond to The Post\u2019s request for comment about the growing online backlash.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that \u2018Music\u2019 has been nominated for two Golden Globes awards illustrates the complete disregard the entire entertainment industry has for inclusivity and minority representation,\u201d wrote Nina Skov Jensen and Rosanna Kataja, creators of one of the popular\u00a0anti-\u201cMusic\u201d petitions<\/a>. \u201cIt will only use autism as inspirational porn to make neurotypicals feel good about their supposed \u2018superiority.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite claiming her movie to be a \u2018love letter to caregivers and to the autism community\u2019, she is actually telling the autistic community that she doesn\u2019t care about them,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n

Another\u00a0campaign called<\/a>\u00a0Sia\u2019s actions \u201cinaccurate and [a] hurtful betrayal of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStereotypes are used throughout the trailer, and the visuals are nauseating to autistic people who would\u2019ve wanted to see the film,\u201d wrote petition writer Hannah Marshall.<\/p>\n

Across the board, advocates for autistic people have\u00a0lambasted the film, focusing on the \u201cinhumane treatment\u201d of autistic people in the movie, as the petition alleges.<\/p>\n

Zoe Gross, director of advocacy at the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, said\u00a0in a recent statement<\/a>, \u201cThe autistic community has been fighting for decades to end the use of restraints that traumatize and kill.\u201d<\/p>\n

The National Autism Association has characterized Ziegler\u2019s performance and Sia\u2019s direction as \u201cdangerous and abusive,\u201d particularly for the scenes involving\u00a0restraint and seclusion<\/a>\u00a0of Ziegler\u2019s character \u2014 forms of control that are known to exacerbate and upset those with autism.<\/p>\n

In a January interview\u00a0on YouTube<\/a>, the \u201cChandelier\u201d singer attempted to change her tune, insisting that she couldn\u2019t \u201cdo the project without\u201d Ziegler, a frequent collaborator who has already starred in a number of Sia videos. The pop star also revealed that her lead actor had previously admitted her own fears of inadvertently making a mockery of autistic people, but Sia assured Ziegler she would not \u201clet that happ<\/a>en.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow does one act autistic, you may ask,\u201d the Change.org campaign continues. \u201cIf we look at Ziegler\u2019s portrayal, the answer is by stereotypically mimicking autistic people the exact same way autistic people have been bullied and mocked their entire lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt also enforces the idea that autistic people are not good enough and that their autism is better portrayed by someone with no concept of what it is to be autistic.\u201d<\/p>\n

The backlash finally prompted Sia to tweet \u201csorry\u201d for listening to \u201cthe wrong people\u201d during the making of the film \u2014 an 180-degree turn from her\u00a0original defense<\/a>, which saw the debut filmmaker lash out at one actor with autism who auditioned for the role, suggesting \u201cmaybe you\u2019re just a bad actor\u201d for not landing the part. She has also since pledged to add a disclaimer to her movie, although reports have been mixed as to whether the warning is yet in place.<\/p>\n

\u201cMUSIC in no way condones or recommends the use of restraint on autistic people,\u201d the new warning reportedly reads. \u201cThere are autistic occupational therapists that specialize in sensory processing who can be consulted to explain safe ways to provide proprioceptive, deep-pressure feedback to help [with] meltdown safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the disclaimer was nowhere to be seen by the time the Autisticats, an autism advocacy group on social media, delivered their thorough take on the film last weekend, paying close attention to Ziegler\u2019s physical portrayal of autism.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is absolutely nothing wrong with the ways autistic people move, or the ways we make facial expressions,\u201d they wrote, referencing Zielger\u2019s exaggerated performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also want to emphasize that, while I mention Ziegler frequently in this post because she is the actress portraying the autistic character, this whole fiasco is not her fault. She was only 14 at the time that filming began,\u201d the Autisticats said. \u201cThe blame lies with Sia and the other members of this project who did not stop this before it got out of hand.\u201d<\/p>\n
