{"id":18143,"date":"2020-06-30T19:31:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-30T16:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/gabon-votes-to-reverse-ban-on-homosexuality\/"},"modified":"2020-06-30T19:31:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-30T16:31:00","slug":"gabon-votes-to-reverse-ban-on-homosexuality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/gabon-votes-to-reverse-ban-on-homosexuality\/","title":{"rendered":"#Gabon votes to reverse ban on homosexuality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Gabon votes to reverse ban on homosexuality<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-wrapper\" role=\"main\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>        June 30, 2020 <span>|<\/span> 12:31pm            <\/p>\n<div>\n                        LIBREVILLE \u2013 Gabon\u2019s Senate voted on Monday to decriminalize homosexuality, a landmark result that makes the country one of the few in Africa to reverse a ban on same-sex relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Under a law passed in 2019, Gabon became one of 73 countries or jurisdictions around the world, including more than two dozen in Africa, where sex between men and between women was illegal.<\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s move to reverse part of the law has sharply divided opinion and sparked intense debate on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> in the central African nation, where homosexuality is still broadly seen as a taboo.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to remove legislation criminalizing homosexuality still face challenges elsewhere. In Botswana, the government has said it will <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eal a high court ruling that legalized same-sex relationships.<\/p>\n<p>The government did not explain why it decided to revise the law. The bill won the support of the lower house last week.<\/p>\n<p>In the Senate, it \u201cwas adopted with a large majority of 59 votes,\u201d Jessye Ella Ekogha, a spokesman for Gabon\u2019s presidency, told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>In a closed-door session, 17 Senators voted against the move and four abstained.<\/p>\n<p>It will now be ratified by President Ali Bongo.
