Don\u2019t bite the hand that streams you?<\/p>\n

Following in the footsteps of other auteur filmmakers who engage in Netflix-bashing, iconic director Martin Scorsese has eviscerated streaming platforms for supposedly devaluing the \u201cart of cinema\u201d due to a lack of \u201ccuration.\u201d<\/p>\n

The legendary \u201cGoodfellas\u201d director \u2014 already a noted non-fan of blockbusters<\/a> from Marvel \u2014 dropped the bombshell in an essay on filmmaking icon Federico Fellini published in the March 2021 issue of Harper\u2019s Magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While admitting he owes a lot to online film purveyors (\u201cThe Irishman\u201d was distributed to much acclaim by \u201cNetflix\u201d after all), Scorsese, 78, argued that today\u2019s movie scene is being \u201creduced to its lowest common denominator\u201d by the designation of films as \u201ccontent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs recently as 15 years ago, the term \u2018content\u2019 was heard only when people were discussing the cinema on a serious level, and it was contrasted with and measured against \u2018form,\u2019 \u201d the \u201cRaging Bull\u201d director wrote. \u201cThen, gradually, it was used more and more by the people who took over media<\/a> companies, most of whom knew nothing about the history of the art form, or even cared enough to think that they should.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth noting here that Scorsese signed a deal in August to make new movies<\/a> \u2014 for the streaming platform App<\/a>le TV+.<\/p>\n

However, he continued to rail against streaming in his Harper\u2019s rant: \u201d \u2018Content\u2019 became a business term for all moving images: a David Lean movie, a cat video, a Super Bowl commercial, a superhero sequel, a series episode.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Oscar-winning helmer of \u201cTaxi Driver\u201d and \u201cThe Departed\u201d also claimed that the movie theater experience had been hijacked by online movie bazaars much like Amazon commandeered commerce from brick-and-mortar stores. This process is perhaps being accelerated by the mass theater closures and simultaneous uptick in digital streaming amid the coronavirus pandemic. <\/p>\n

Conceptualizing all films as \u201ccontent\u201d might appear equitable on its face, but the New York native deems the phenomenon anything but \u201cdemocratic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCurating isn\u2019t undemocratic or \u2018elitist,\u2019 a term that is now used so often that it\u2019s become meaningless,\u201d Scorsese argued. \u201cIt\u2019s an act of generosity \u2014 you\u2019re sharing what you love and what has inspired you. (The best streaming platforms, such as the Criterion Channel and MUBI and traditional outlets such as TCM, are based on curating \u2014 they\u2019re actually curated.)\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cAlgorithms, by definition, are based on calculations that treat the viewer as a consumer and nothing\u00a0else,\u201d he observed. <\/p>\n

Nonetheless, Scorsese alluded to the fact that he owes a lot to streaming services of late. Case in point: \u201cThe Irishman\u201d\u00a0was financed and released by Netflix after Paramount turned it down, while his upcoming movie,\u00a0\u201cKillers\u00a0of the Flower Moon,\u201d will be\u00a0funded by Apple TV+, Entertainment Weekly reported<\/a>. Prior to that, the \u201cMean Streets\u201d creator struggled to have his oft-lengthy flicks greenlit by studio executives. <\/p>\n

Scorsese concluded in the Harper\u2019s essay that \u201cwe have to refine our notions of what cinema is and what it isn\u2019t.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t depend on the movie business, such as it is, to take care of cinema,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIn the movie business, which is now the mass visual entertainment business, the emphasis is always on the word \u2018business,\u2019 and value is always determined by the amount of money to be made from any given property.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, some might disagree with Scorsese\u2019s definition of what constitutes a film. Last year, the moviemaker infamously outraged superhero flick fans and actors alike after claiming that Marvel blockbusters<\/a> were theme parks and not \u201ccinema.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n
