\n A Florida professor who cited \u201cblack privilege\u201d among several controversial posts about race amid the national protests over George Floyd\u2019s death is being investigated over the messages, school officials said.<\/p>\n

Recent tweets on the personal account of Charles Negy \u2014 a University of Central Florida associate psychology professor and author of \u201cWhite Shaming: Bullying Based on Prejudice, Virtue-Signaling and Ignorance\u201d \u2014 were being evaluated by school officials Thursday after students and alumni called for his ouster.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing actively anti-racist means calling out and confronting racist comments,\u201d UCF said in statement Thursday. \u201cWe are aware of Charles Negy\u2019s recent personal Twitter<\/a> posts, which are completely counter to UCF\u2019s values.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officials at the public university in Orlando were reviewing the matter while \u201cbeing mindful of the First Amendment,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n

In separate tweets Wednesday, Negy cited \u201cblack privilege\u201d in one, while directly comparing African Americans and Asian Americans in another.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlack privilege is real: Besides affirm. action, special scholarships and other set asides, being shielded from legitimate criticism is a privilege,\u201d Negy tweeted. \u201cBut as a group, they\u2019re missing out on much needed feedback.\u201d<\/p>\n

In another, Negy tweeted: \u201cSincere question: If Afr. Americans as a group, had the same behavioral profile as Asian Americans (on average, performing the best academically, having the highest income, committing the lowest crime, etc.), would we still be proclaiming \u2018systemic racism\u2019 exists?\u201d<\/p>\n

The professor\u2019s tweets were protected as of Thursday afternoon, meaning users had to request access from him to view his posts.<\/p>\n

Negy, meanwhile, acknowledged Thursday that his views are controversial, but insisted he\u2019s protected by the First Amendment, the Orlando Sentinel reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the potential beauty of it,\u201d he wrote the news<\/a>paper in an email.<\/p>\n

Negy joined UCF in 1998 after earning his doctorate from Texas A&M University, according to his university webpage. He told the Sentinel he was unsure if UCF launched a formal investigation into his posts, although he insisted he wasn\u2019t worried about its possible outcome.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Administrators know] that despite how unpopular some of my views are with some folks, they must actively protest the U.S. Constitution\u2019s free speech,\u201d Negy told the newspaper.<\/p>\n

In addition to people calling for Negy\u2019s firing with a #UCFfirehim hashtag on Twitter, more than 2,800 people have signed an online petition for him to be let go as of Thursday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
