Jamaican musician U-Roy has died, Jamaican media<\/a> sources<\/a> reports. His longtime collaborator Neil Fraser, aka Ariwa Sounds studio\u2019s Mad Professor, confirmed the news<\/a> to Pitchfork. U-Roy, or Daddy U-Roy, was known for pioneering the vocal style of \u201ctoasting,\u201d performing conversational, rhythmic speech over a reggae or dancehall beat. Throughout his career, U-Roy released some 20 records and contributed to Toots and Maytals\u2019 Grammy-winning album True Love<\/em>. He was awarded the Order of Distinction by the Jamaican government for his influence on the country\u2019s music scene.<\/p>\n

Born Ewart Beckford in Jones Town, Jamaica, in the 1940s, U-Roy was given his nickname by a younger family member who couldn\u2019t pronounce Ewart. He started his musical career as a deejay\u2014in the Jamaican parlance, a vocalist over reggae and dancehall music\u2014and earned a reputation as the King of Toasters (and later as the Originator). In 1970, John Holt of \u00a0ska group the Paragons pushed for Beckford to be signed. His subsequent hits \u201cWake the Town\u201d and \u201cWear You to the Ball\u201d established him as one of Jamaica\u2019s most popular musical exports.\u00a0<\/p>\n

By the late 1970s, he reached international fame for records like 1976\u2019s Natty Rebel<\/em> and 1978\u2019s Jah Son of Africa<\/em>. He created his own sound system\u2014a collective of deejays, engineers, and toasters\u2014called Stur Gav that helped launch the careers of his proteg\u00e9es Charli Chaplin, Josey Wales, and Brigadier Jerry. He continued releasing music into the late 2010s, culminating with 2019\u2019s Rebel in Styylle<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
