In retrospect, it\u2019s no surprise that The Masked Dancer<\/em>\u2018s second-place winner (Sloth) was revealed as none other than Dancing With the Stars<\/em><\/a> pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cTaking off the mask felt like a finish line, whereas had I been \u2018eliminated\u2019 a few weeks before that, it would\u2019ve been, \u2018I wish I had more of this experience,’\u201d Chmerkovsky tells TV Insider.<\/p>\n

Chmerkovskiy tells us how this experience differed from his time on DWTS<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What made you do the show?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Maksim Chmerkovskiy:<\/strong> It was something I would be able to do well, but while on Dancing With the Stars<\/em> we were encouraged to be as competitive as possible, here the idea was to enjoy the process. I did compete, but not consciously. It wasn\u2019t the point. The point was to experience this project and it was incredible.<\/p>\n

How else did it differ?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The nature of the show isn\u2019t that you do your best dance \u2014 that would be very telling of who we are \u2014 but to keep people guessing. To that point, the very first dance we choreographed was the one I ended up doing in Semifinals, when everyone thought, \u201cThis is Maks or Val<\/a>,\u201d my brother. When we finished [that] choreography, the producers looked at it and said, \u201cYeah, no. We can\u2019t lead with that.\u201d That\u2019s when I realized what this is not: a dance competition. It wasn\u2019t that I wasn\u2019t dancing well; I wasn\u2019t doing moves that would be recognizable for someone who\u2019s a professional. That\u2019s why you saw the ribbon dance, Bollywood, and other moves.<\/p>\n

So the \u201cmusical comedy\u201d and leaning into the Sloth character were a kind of misdirection?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Absolutely. I also liked the Sloth. I felt he was my guy, someone I was doing this with: \u201cAlright, Slothy, let\u2019s get to work.\u201d I really enjoyed the comedy, the miming, all that stuff. I was trained in moving. Up until Dancing With the Stars<\/em>, it wasn\u2019t weird to dance and not say anything. So being in a mask was not strange at all.<\/p>\n

The most difficult part of this whole process was doing this in this costume. It was very restricting. The mask was very uncomfortable to spin and do stuff in that I really wanted to do. There were a lot of limitations. But then it turned out to be good because I shouldn\u2019t have been spinning and spiraling and all that stuff.<\/p>\n

Which panelist did you think would figure out who you were?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Paula [Abdul]<\/a>, and she did. Paula\u2019s from our world and she knows us and we know her.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your takeaway? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Dancing With the Stars<\/em> in the very beginning, and the fact we did it twice a year for so many years, felt like a conveyor belt. I wasn\u2019t able to sit back and reflect. I\u2019ve been responsible for myself and every project that I\u2019m part of, [involved in the] production as well as the performances, making a lot of decisions. With this one, I walked in and said I wanted to be told what to do, and just have a little bit of leeway if I want to change steps. It was incredible. It was the best experience I\u2019ve had on a production.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not knocking on Dancing With the Stars<\/em>. I loved it. We\u2019re the pros and somebody comes in and they\u2019re the celebrity, so that means they show up, they\u2019re told what to do, they do it, and they go home. We\u2019re the ones with the show 24\/7 in our heads. I\u2019ve never been a celebrity like this \u2014 I didn\u2019t have to go through that process, and it was amazing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
