“#Bonne Maman ‘anti-Nazi jam’ thread goes viral on Twitter<\/a><\/strong>”<\/p>\n

There may be more to this jam than its rustic label. <\/p>\n

Bonne Maman<\/a>, a popular French preserves company available in most grocery stories and online, is going viral for an unverified but heartwarming story of Nazi resistance. <\/p>\n

The \u201canti-Nazi jam\u201d story, which has gone viral on Twitter<\/a>, was shared by Michael Perino, a St. John\u2019s University law professor. Perino said he was grocery shopping in northern New Jersey on Valentine\u2019s Day when he encountered a woman in her 80s or 90s, struggling to reach a jar of jam. <\/p>\n

Perino, 57, helped her grab the product, and she then asked him, \u201cDo you know why I buy this brand?\u201d<\/p>\n

She went on to describe how she was a Holocaust survivor and \u201cthe family that owns the company hid my family in Paris,\u201d Perino recalled her saying. <\/p>\n

I told her that that was the best reason I ever heard to buy any company\u2019s product. And then we both smiled behind our masks and went our separate ways.<\/p>\n

The thread went viral, with 27,300 likes and more than 6,500 retweets on the start of his post. Perino\u2019s followers vowed to support the company and proudly shared pictures of the jam already in their fridges. <\/p>\n

However, the details are hard to confirm \u2014 Snopes.com could not prove<\/a> the veracity of the tale. And the brand itself, which was created well after the Holocaust in 1971, couldn\u2019t confirm that the family behind its jams helped shelter Jews during the war, telling the Jewish Telegraphic Agency<\/a> in a statement that \u201cThe family prefers to maintain privacy and does not comment on inquiries about personal matters.\u201d <\/p>\n

No one in the town of Biars-sur-C\u00e8re, where the company is based, was listed on Israel\u2019s Holocaust memorial and museum registry of \u201crighteous gentiles\u201d \u2014 those who rescued Jews during the Holocaust, according to the JTA. While the woman said she was sheltered in Paris, the founding family was based in Biars-sur-C\u00e8re at the time of the war.<\/p>\n

But other internet sleuths say it\u2019s plausible the woman was remembering correctly. One remarked<\/a> that the family behind Bonne Maman may have lived in Paris during the war, adding a link to a genealogy site for Henri Gervoson<\/a>, a sibling of one of the founders. <\/p>\n

Others said it\u2019s possible the woman just meant that she was sheltered near Paris \u2014 the town is about 300 miles from Paris. One commenter on Perino\u2019s Twitter thread<\/a> said Biars-sur-C\u00e8re is \u201cwell known in the area for their links to the resistance and helping hide Jews in the war.\u201d<\/p>\n

After taking in the many critiques and praises, Perino added to his thread that he didn\u2019t fact-check the woman before he shared her story. But, he added, \u201cLet me ask you this question \u2014 what possible reason would this woman have to go out of her way to lie to the perfect stranger who just retrieved a jar of preserves for her?\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
