A slew of professional consequences followed for Wallen as an individual, but the incident also opened a wider conversation about ongoing racism in the genre as a whole. This includes everything from how non-white artists get played far less on country radio to the use of actively racist symbols, like the Confederate flag.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: Wallen Urges Fans To Stop Defending Him Following N-Word Controversy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Around the same time Wallen\u2019s scandal broke, <strong>Luke Combs<\/strong> released a new track, <em>The Great Divide<\/em>, with lyrics about political division in the US. Over on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a><\/strong>, the announcement was met with heavy criticism for Luke\u2019s own history with the Confederate flag, including from fellow country singer <strong>Margo Price<\/strong> (below).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">to the folks telling me to fuck off and calling me a cunt, I simply shared some photos. here\u2019s another for y\u2019all <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QWAidGbweL\">pic.twitter.com\/QWAidGbweL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Margo Price (@MissMargoPrice) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MissMargoPrice\/status\/1356651753765298176?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 2, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>(The photos Margo posted includes a still from Combs\u2019 2020 performance on <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em>, where he flashed the \u201cOK\u201d symbol. This gesture in recent years has been co-opted by white supremacists. Some argued that the artist was explicitly making a white power symbol, but the gesture did coincide with the lyrics \u201cthree chords and the truth,\u201d so it may have simply meant the number three.)<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the controversial <em>Better Together<\/em> singer joined <strong>Maren Morris<\/strong> in a conversation about racism in country music for the annual Country Radio Seminar. During the talk, he acknowledged the backlash to <em>The Great Divide<\/em>, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen I released the song, there were some images that resurfaced of me, and it\u2019s not the first time that those images have surfaced and have been used against me. And obviously those are images that I can\u2019t take back. \u2026. Obviously in the age of the internet, those things live forever. And there is no excuse for those images.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He went on:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s not okay. As a younger man, that was an image that I associated to mean something else. And as I\u2019ve grown in my time as an artist, and as the world has changed drastically in the last five to seven years, I am now aware how painful that image can be to someone else. \u2026 At the time that those images existed, I wasn\u2019t aware what that was portraying to the world and to African-American artists in Nashville that were saying, \u2018Man, I really want to come in and get a deal and do this thing, but how can I be around with these images being promoted?\u2019 And I apologize for being associated with that. \u2026 I would never want to be associated with something that brings so much hurt to someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Maren and Luke both spoke about lack of education in the south about what the Confederate flag truly means. The latter even admitted that he \u201cnever considered \u2026 up until seven or eight years ago\u201d that it was a hateful symbol for Black Americans. Yet he participated in a music video less than six years ago for his song <em>Can I Get An Outlaw<\/em> (a song about returning to \u201creal\u201d country music) that was loaded with Confederate imagery as well as clips of men loading guns, the combination of which reads like a pretty explicit threat against anyone non-white in the genre, at least in our opinion.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ryan Upchurch &quot;Can I get a Outlaw\u201d  OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ikxnz2NIdxI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: Chase Rice Slammed For Joking About COVID-19 Months After Packed Concert Amid Pandemic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You could argue that the video stands for the exact opposite of what the North Carolina native discussed with <em>The Middle<\/em> singer. Yet as it turns out, it was his idea to make racism the topic of their seminar. The 30-year-old shared:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI just want everyone out there to be able to come into our community and be accepted and not feel excluded or pushed out. \u2026 I want those people to have the same opportunities that I had to feel that incredible feeling of having their dreams come true in the amazing genre that we have.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Okay, well maybe don\u2019t refer to the Black community as \u201cthose people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cPeople can be changed. I mean, I think I\u2019m a living, mouth-breathing example of it right here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We agree that people can change, and his apology was absolutely necessary, but it seems like Luke should have to answer specifically for a video like <em>Can I Get An Outlaw<\/em>. We also hesitate to endorse the idea, which both artists expressed, that most Southerners simply don\u2019t know what they\u2019re doing when they fly the Confederate flag. It\u2019s 2021, and that excuse falls really flat when we all have access to the internet and Black Americans have been speaking up about this issue for decades.<\/p>\n<p>But what do U think, Perezcious readers?
