Don\u2019t let the notorious #BTSArmy hear about this: Boy band hopefuls are gearing up for a battle to become the next <\/em>BTS.<\/p>\n

Big Hit Entertainment, the label behind the K-pop sensation, and Universal Music Group will develop the new band, according to a joint statement<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI strongly believe that UMG and Big Hit will create a synergy that will rewrite the global music history,\u201d said Bang Si-Hyuk, the chief executive of Big Hit. The artists would debut under a new label created by BHE and Universal\u2019s Geffen Records.<\/p>\n

The global music giants are planning a \u201csurvival-type\u201d reality competition show, which is intended to give American audiences a look into the notoriously rigorous<\/a> \u2014 and occasionally<\/a> controversial \u2014 K-pop industry machine. Some artists and groups have been known to train for years with performance coaches and other tutors \u2014 in a dormitory setting with other would-be pop stars \u2014 well before premiering their acts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith their innovative app<\/a>roach to developing artists and embracing new technology<\/a>, Big Hit has become one of the most dynamic companies in music entertainment,\u201d UMG\u2019s chief executive Sir Lucian Grainge said. <\/p>\n

The showdown series<\/a> format has already produced popular acts in South Korea, according to music writer Sarah Bathke, who spoke to<\/a> the BBC.<\/p>\n

BTS\u2019 2020 album \u201cMap of the Soul: 7,\u201d featuring recent hits \u201cOn\u201d and \u201cBoy With Luv,\u201d was the No. 1 selling physical record<\/a> of last year, and No. 2 in overall album sales, including digital, with 674,000 sold \u2014 second only to Taylor Swift\u2019s \u201cFolklore,\u201d which unloaded a total of 1.27 million.<\/p>\n

Competition is already on the way, as legendary Korean solo artist Rain discussed the launch of Ciipher, a new K-pop group under his charge, in an interview with Korea\u2019s 1st Look, according to<\/a> K-pop news<\/a> site Soompi.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like I could bet it all on them,\u201d said the 38-year-old musician, born Jung Ji-hoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were a lot of factors involved in the process of making Ciipher, but when I met these kids, I felt like I could bet it all on them,\u201d the mentor said. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhether the group has good results or not, I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll regret the things that I gave to this group. That\u2019s how talented and well-mannered they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Besides Geffen, Universal\u2019s roster of hit-making labels also includes Capitol, Def Jam and Abbey Road Studios.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
