Ari Aster<\/strong> and Joaquin Phoenix <\/strong>are teaming up for\u00a0Disapp<\/a>ointment Blvd.<\/em><\/strong>, a title that\u2019s coming from Aster\u2019s buddies over at A24. The indie distributor pumped out Aster\u2019s\u00a0Hereditary<\/em> and\u00a0Midsommar<\/em>, so it makes sense that the director would want to stick with them. We don\u2019t know much about the title just yet, but the official word is that it\u2019ll be a\u00a0\u201cdecades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.\u201d Aster has dropped several hints about what his new movie might be about in the past, but it\u2019s unclear if he was talking about this project.<\/p>\n

The news<\/a> about\u00a0Disappointment Blvd.<\/em>\u00a0comes from Deadline, which reports that Joaquin Phoenix has been circling the project for a while.<\/em> When the Oscar-winner finally committed to the role, the title was shopped around to several studios \u2013 but ultimately, A24, the studio behind Ari Aster\u2019s previous two films, won out. Deadline adds that the film is \u201can intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.\u201d
\nBut Aster has been talking about his next movie for a few months now, and I\u2019m wondering if the project he\u2019s been teasing matches up with that description. Back in June of 2020, Aster said that his next movie was going to be a \u201cnightmare comedy.\u201d He also added that the film would be four hours long. Now, Aster could\u2019ve been exaggerating there, or joking around. But he\u2019s certainly no stranger to lengthy runtimes \u2013 the theatrical cut of\u00a0Midsommar<\/em> is 148 minutes, while the director\u2019s cut clocks in at\u00a0171 minutes.<\/p>\n

In November of 2020, word<\/a> surfaced that Aster\u2019s new movie was going to be \u201ca surrealist horror film set in an alternate present.\u201d This was an unconfirmed rumor and didn\u2019t come from Aster himself, but the November story\u00a0did<\/em> mention the potential involvement of Phoenix, adding that the actor \u201cwould play an extremely anxious but pleasant-looking man who has a fraught relationship with his overbearing mother and never knew his father\u2026When his mother dies, he makes a journey home that involves some wild supernatural threats.\u201d<\/p>\n

So I have to wonder: is\u00a0Disappointment Blvd.<\/em> the four-hour nightmare comedy Aster was talking about? And are the rumors about \u201cwild supernatural threats\u201d part of the plot? We\u2019re going to have to wait and see. Aster will write and direct the pic, and he\u2019ll produce along with\u00a0Lars Knudsen<\/strong>. I\u2019m a big fan of Aster\u2019s work \u2013 I loved\u00a0Hereditary<\/em> and I think I loved\u00a0Midsommar<\/em> even more. So I\u2019m all-in on whatever he does next. Throwing in Phoenix, who is one of the best actors of his generation, just sweetens the deal.<\/p>\n
