\n Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul on Tuesday ripped into Dr. Anthony Fauci and what he called government \u201ccentral planners\u201d during a hearing on COVID-19 response, asserting that Americans should not be \u201csheep\u201d \u2014 and that US schools should reopen.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a fatal conceit to believe any one person or small group of people has the knowledge necessary to direct an economy or dictate public health behavior. I think government experts need to show caution in their prognostications,\u201d Paul, a Republican and libertarian, told the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing featuring the Trump administration\u2019s top coronavirus experts.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important to realize that if society meekly submits to an expert and that expert is wrong, a great deal of harm may occur when we allow one man\u2019s policy or one group of small men and women to be foisted on an entire nation,\u201d Paul continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake for example government experts who continue to call for schools and day care to stay closed or that recommend restrictions that make it impossible for a school to function. There are examples from all across the United States and around the world that show that young children rarely spread the virus,\u201d he asserted, pointing to countries that have reopened, including Denmark, France and Germany.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo spike when schools are opened. Central planners have enough knowledge somehow to tell a nation of some 330 million people what they can and can\u2019t do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe shouldn\u2019t presume that a group of experts somehow knows what\u2019s best for everyone. Only decentralized power and decision-making based on millions of individualized situations can arrive at what risk and behaviors each individual will choose. That\u2019s what America was founded on, not a herd with Washington telling us what to do and like sheep we blindly follow.\u201d<\/p>\n

He then slammed Dr. Anthony Fauci, accusing the director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases and White House task force member of being a know-it-all.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Fauci, every day we seem to hear from you things we can\u2019t do. But when you\u2019re asked, can we go back to school? I don\u2019t hear much certitude at all. Well, maybe. It depends. Guess what? It\u2019s rare for kids to transmit this. I don\u2019t hear that coming from you. All I hear is, \u2018We can\u2019t do this, we can\u2019t do that, we can\u2019t play baseball,\u2019\u201d Paul said.<\/p>\n

Fauci jokingly asked Sen. Lamar Alexander, the committee\u2019s chair, if he could have a little extra time to respond to Paul.<\/p>\n

\u201cSen. Paul, I agree with so much of what you say, people putting opinions out without data. Sometimes you have to make extrapolations because you\u2019re in a position where you need to give some sort of recommendation,\u201d Fauci said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you were listening \u2014 and I think you were \u2014 to my opening statement and my response to one of the questions, I feel very strongly we need to do whatever we can to get the children back to school. I think we\u2019re in lock agreement with that,\u201d Fauci continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe other thing I\u2019d like to clarify very briefly. I never said we can\u2019t play a certain sport. What happ<\/a>ens is the people in the sports industry \u2026 from the [MLB] Players Association, owners, people involved in the health of the players ask me opinions regarding certain facts about the spread of the virus. I give it, and then it gets interpreted that I\u2019m saying you can\u2019t play this sport or you can\u2019t play that sport,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing I can do is to the best of my ability give you the facts and evidence associated with what I know about this outbreak.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than 125,000 Americans have died to date from the virus.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
