Oscar-nominated director Christopher Nolan\u2018s secret to a top-grossing flick has been revealed: no chairs on set.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t allow chairs, and his reasoning is, if you have chairs, people will sit, and if they\u2019re sitting, they\u2019re not working,\u201d says Anne Hathaway, who starred in Nolan\u2019s 2014 sci-fi flick \u201cInterstellar\u201d and played Catwoman in his 2012 movie \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises.\u201d She reveals the rule during a video chat with her former \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d co-star Hugh Jackman\u00a0for Variety\u2018s \u201cActors on Actors\u201d issue. The magazine released the Skype session Monday night, exposing some head-scratching details about the storied director\u2019s strict on-set standards.<\/p>\n

Hathway, who snagged a 2013 Oscar for her role in director Tom Hopper\u2019s \u201cLes Mis,\u201d seems to back the decree. \u201c[The movie] always arrives at the end under schedule and under budget. I think he\u2019s onto something with the chair thing,\u201d she tells Jackman, who worked with Nolan on the 2006 film \u201cThe Prestige.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s broken [filmmaking] down to its most minimal,\u201d says Hathway, 37, who went on to call 49-year-old Nolan \u201cinspiring.\u201d Perhaps \u201cmost minimal\u201d means cast and crew should find a wall to lean on if they need a break.<\/p>\n

Alhough the duo spends most of their hourlong chat heaping praise on each other \u2014 \u201cYou can\u2019t compliment me before I compliment you!\u201d coos Hathway at one point \u2014 Jackman does dish on other director demands, including a no-cellphone rule established by Nolan, Darren Aronofsky (Jackman starred in his 2006 film \u201cThe Fountain\u201d) and Denis Villeneuve (Jackman was in his 2013 movie \u201cPrisoners\u201d).<\/p>\n

Jackman, who most recently starred in HBO\u2019s \u201cBad Education,\u201d even offers an odd, new-wave reasoning for the edict: \u201cIt\u2019s about intentionality,\u201d says the 51-year-old actor, adding that it\u2019s \u201cabout the space being sacred. If you\u2019re on a cellphone, it dissipates that energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hathaway also offers a mea culpa for bungling her 2011 co-hosting of the Oscars \u2014 The Post called her turn \u201chyperactive\u201d \u2014 by heaping praise on Jackman\u2019s hosting performance in 2009.<\/p>\n
