“#Akron\/Family\u2019s Miles Seaton Has Died at 41<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Miles Cooper Seaton, a founding member of the experimental rock band Akron\/Family, has died. Dead Oceans, the label that released Akron\/Family\u2019s final albums, confirmed the news<\/a>. His cause of death is currently unknown. He was 41.<\/p>\n

Seaton was born in California and relocated with his family to Seattle when he was young. In the early 2000s, he met Seth Olinsky, Ryan Vanderhoof, and Dana Janssen in New York City; they\u2019d all moved there within months of each other and ended up living together in the same apartment. Seaton moved to the city from Seattle hoping to do something as a musician.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, you move there and you get the worst job imaginable, and it\u2019s shitty, you don\u2019t have money and it\u2019s really cold,\u201d Seaton told Foggy Notions<\/em><\/a> in 2006. \u201cAnd so when we met, and we were playing, that was the happ<\/a>iest thing that was going on. And when we were recording\u2014I mean we were playing for hours and hours. So much stuff was coming out.\u201d<\/p>\n

As with the other members of Akron\/Family, Seaton took a multi-instrumental role in the band. Their first albums were released by Michael Gira\u2019s Young God Records: Akron\/Family<\/em> (2005), their split with Angels of Light (2005), Meek Warrior<\/em> (2006), and Love Is Simple<\/em> (2007). Their last three albums were released by Dead Oceans: Set \u2019Em Wild, Set \u2019Em Free<\/em> (2009), Akron\/Family II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shiniju TNT<\/em> (2011), and Sub Verses<\/em> (2013).<\/p>\n

As Akron\/Family\u2019s activity wound down, Seaton continued making music under his own name, issuing projects like 2013\u2019s Notes from the Interior<\/em> and 2015\u2019s Functional Music Vols. 1 & 2.<\/em> His last album, 2017\u2019s Phases in Exile<\/em>, featured collaborations with Brad Cook, Phil Cook, and M. Geddes Gengras.<\/p>\n

\u201cDamn, Miles. You were such a comet,\u201d Brad Cook wrote. \u201cYou crash landed in my life and changed everything. First time I heard your music it changed it all for me. I didn\u2019t know you at the time but it changed me. Then we became friends and our friendship changed me. You opened all the doors.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMiles was one of a kind person, in a one of a kind band,\u201d wrote<\/a> Dead Oceans co-founder Phil Waldorf. \u201cIt\u2019s a rush of emotions. Akron\/Family are the type of band that underscore the whole reason Dead Oceans exists. I feel lucky that I knew Miles, and sad that I have to say goodbye. We hope you\u2019ll share some memories. There are too many for me to count right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

M. Geddes Gengras shared a tribute<\/a> that included a story about the period when he was a touring member of Akron\/Family.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At Miles\u2019 request I was opening all the shows playing my alien insect synth music which, as you can imagine, didn\u2019t go over super well in the mid-sized indie rock clubs of 2012 America, but Miles sat at the side of the stage and watched every set from beginning to end. When he noticed that maybe the audience wasn\u2019t paying that much attention he made a point of getting on stage before me every night, introducing me to the audience & explaining how much my music meant to him & that even though it might be different they should really give it a chance and listen closely. I can\u2019t even begin to say how much that meant to me, how good it made me feel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
