It\u2019s time for another Blu-ray round-up, and this week\u2019s titles are what I\u2019d call \u201cspecialty titles.\u201d None of these are new <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> \u2013 but they\u2019re all\u00a0<em>new<\/em> releases. These\u00a0are the new Blu-ray releases (and digital releases, too) you should check out this week.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Trj3Cp_QNbU?feature=oembed\" width=\"740\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Columbia_Classics_Collection\"><\/span><strong>Columbia Classics Collection<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Columbia Classics Collection is a jaw-dropping new box set that has an odd assortment of films, all of which are in 4K, and all of which are worth checking out. While I\u2019m not entirely sure how they decided to classify some of these films as \u201cclassic\u201d \u2013\u00a0<strong><em>Jerry Maguire<\/em><\/strong>? \u2013 I can safely say this set is a stunner. The set includes <strong>Frank Capra<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0<strong><em>Mr. Smith Goes to Washington<\/em><\/strong>, where <strong>Jimmy Stewart<\/strong> plays an idealistic senator who quickly discovers all his colleagues in the beltway are politicians who would rather destroy him than work for the American people;\u00a0<strong><em>Lawrence of Arabia<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>David Lean<\/strong>\u2018s epic about\u00a0T.E. Lawrence, as played by\u00a0<strong>Peter O\u2019Toole<\/strong>;\u00a0<strong><em>Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>Stanley Kubrick<\/strong>\u2018s pitch-black satire about the end of the world via nuclear war;\u00a0<strong>Richard Attenborough<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0<strong><em>Gandhi<\/em><\/strong>, where\u00a0<strong>Ben Kingsley<\/strong> plays the Indian leader devoted to non-violence;\u00a0<strong><em>A League of Their Own<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>Penny Marshall<\/strong>\u2018s hilarious, heartfelt look at the\u00a0All-American Girls Baseball League, with a cast that includes <strong>Geena Davis<\/strong>, <strong>Tom Hanks<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Madonna<\/strong>; and\u00a0<em>Jerry Maguire<\/em>, Cameron Crowe\u2019s romantic drama starring Tom Cruise as a down-on-his-luck sports agent trying to put his life back together.<\/p>\n<p>Without exception, all of these films are good \u2013 some are even great. The \u201cworst\u201d film here would probably be\u00a0<em>Jerry Maguire<\/em>, and even that has its charms. And while these titles may not all go together, the prospect of having them all together \u2013 on 4K, no less \u2013 is too good to pass up. I particularly enjoyed revisiting\u00a0<em>A League of Their Own<\/em>, which is even better than I remember. It\u2019s a funny, charming, even melancholy film that I might dare say is perfect. Most of the rest of the titles here speak for themselves:\u00a0<em>Lawrence of Arabia<\/em> is often held up as one of the best films of all time, and while Criterion recently released their own version of\u00a0<em>Dr. Strangelove<\/em>, it\u2019s still great to have Kubrick\u2019s classic in 4K.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"408\"  src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-25-at-11.38.38-AM-700x408.jpg\"  width=\"700\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p><strong>Own or Rent?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, this is an easy one: own, primarily because you\u00a0<em>can\u2019t<\/em> rent this one. The price (currently\u00a0$106.99 on Amazon) might scare some off, but all things considered, that\u2019s a very fair cost for so many 4K movies. Especially since all of the films collected here are worth owning. It\u2019s wild to look back now, 20 years later, and remember that\u00a0<em>Gladiator<\/em> was a major Oscar winner, taking home Best Picture and Best Actor, among other awards. I\u2019m not saying\u00a0<em>Gladiator<\/em> is\u00a0<em>bad<\/em> \u2013 it just doesn\u2019t really seem like an \u201cOscar movie.\u201d The book\u00a0<em>The Men Who Would Be King<\/em>, about the creation of DreamWorks, goes into great detail about how the DreamWorks publicity people worked overtime to get\u00a0<em>Gladiator<\/em> noticed by the Academy \u2013 and it worked, obviously.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ridley Scott<\/strong>\u2018s<em> Gladiator<\/em> has <strong>Russell Crowe<\/strong> as\u00a0Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> who is betrayed by the sniveling Commodus (a great, nasty <strong>Joaquin Phoenix<\/strong>, clearly relishing playing an unredeemable jerk). Maximus\u2019 wife and child are killed, and Maximus himself is left for dead. But he recovers \u2013 only to end up a slave forced to become a gladiator. When he\u2019s not dodging swords and wild animals in the\u00a0Colosseum, he\u2019s plotting his revenge. Again: this doesn\u2019t read as Oscar-bait. Instead, it\u2019s an entertaining, gory, action-packed sword-and-sandal epic, and it holds up surprisingly well.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tSPZhiTF7kA?feature=oembed\" width=\"740\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Own or Rent?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gonna go with OWN for this one. I\u2019m not an avid steelbook collector, but I will confess that they\u2019re nifty. And if you don\u2019t already own\u00a0<em>Gladiator<\/em>, this is the version to scoop up. The film was actually already released on 4K back in 2018, so it\u2019s not exactly\u00a0<em>new<\/em>. I am by no means condoning Mr. Gibson\u2019s actions \u2013 I\u2019m just talking about a movie he made 25 years ago. Back before Gibson\u2019s terrible deeds derailed his career (at least for a while), he was a box office star, and he directed and starred in the epic\u00a0<em>Braveheart<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the true story of Scottish warrior William Wallace, Gibson\u2019s film takes a\u00a0<em>lot<\/em> of liberties with history. For instance: the real Battle of Sterling took place on a bridge, but here, it\u2019s set entirely in a big open field. That\u2019s just one instance, there are many more. But movies like this aren\u2019t meant to be factual records, they\u2019re meant to be entertainment. And say what you will about Gibson (and you can say a lot), he knows how to direct an epic. Full of big, bloody battles and swooning romance,\u00a0<em>Braveheart<\/em> was a huge deal when it arrived in \u201995, and the big battle scenes still have the power to thrill.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G_hNa7UGV7k?feature=oembed\" width=\"740\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Own or Rent?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A tough one. You might not want to plop down money for this if you have a problem with Mel Gibson, and that\u2019s perfectly understandable. However, if you\u2019re a fan of this film, this is a good version of it to own.
