The Running Man<\/em><\/strong>, Stephen King<\/strong>\u2018s dystopian novel that was\u00a0very<\/em> loosely adapted into an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie in the \u201980s, is getting a new adaptation from none other than Edgar Wright<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wright\u2019s adaptation will stick more closely to King\u2019s book, which was set in a world where people risked their lives on a deadly game<\/a> show to earn a\u00a0billion-dollar jackpot. Wright is tackling the story adaptation for the film with\u00a0Michael Bacall<\/strong>, and Bacall will write the script<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Deadline broke the news<\/a> that a new\u00a0Running Man<\/em> movie is on the way from Edgar Wright. You no doubt know the title \u2013 it was turned into a goofy-but-entertaining 1987 action movie starring\u00a0Arnold Schwarzenegger and\u00a0Richard Dawson. However, that film was an incredibly loose adaptation of its source material \u2013 a book written by Stephen King under his pseudonym\u00a0Richard Bachman. Here\u2019s the book\u2019s synopsis:<\/p>\n

A desperate man attempts to win a reality TV game where the only objective is to stay alive in this #1 national bestseller from Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachman.<\/p>\n

It was the ultimate death game in a nightmare future America. The year is 2025 and reality TV has grown to the point where people are willing to wager their lives for a chance at a billion-dollar jackpot. Ben Richards is desperate\u2014he needs money to treat his daughter\u2019s illness. His last chance is entering a game show called\u00a0The Running Man<\/i>\u00a0where the goal is to avoid capture by Hunters who are employed to kill him. Surviving this month-long chase is another issue when everyone else on the planet is watching\u2014and willing to turn him in for the reward.<\/p>\n

Each night all Americans tune in to watch. So far, the record for survival is only eight days. Can Ben Richards beat the brutal odds, beat the rigged game, beat the entire savage system? He\u2019s betting his life that he can\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Deadline report adds that Wright\u2019s new movie \u201cwill be much more faithful\u201d to King\u2019s book. Wright is working on co-writing the story with Michael Bacall, whose credits include\u00a0Scott Pilgrim vs. the World<\/em>,\u00a021 Jump Street<\/em>,\u00a022 Jump Street<\/em>, and more. Bacall will then write the script.\u00a0Simon Kinberg<\/strong>\u00a0and Audrey Chon<\/strong> will produce through the Genre Films banner, along with Nira Park<\/strong> from Wright\u2019s Complete Fiction production company.
\nWright has more than a few\u00a0potential films in the pipeline \u2013 there\u2019s\u00a0Stage 13<\/em>, about a haunted film studio; an adaptation of the thriller novel\u00a0The Chain<\/em>; and\u00a0Set My Heart to Five<\/em>,\u00a0about a screenplay-writing robot. However, the Deadline reports that\u00a0The Running Man<\/em> is a \u201ctop priority\u201d for Paramount and that Wright has dreamed of making the movie for several years now. In other words, there\u2019s a good chance he jumps into this before he gets to any of those other projects. Wright\u2019s next movie,\u00a0Last Night in Soho<\/em>, is set to open\u00a0April 23<\/strong>, 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
